Activity Staff

·     Keep up all equipment within activity area including repair and replacement.

Archery Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Experience and knowledge in archery skills and techniques.

·     Ability to communicate skills.

·     Strong commitment to archery safety.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop curriculum and class format in harmony with certification.

·     Ability to maintain equipment such as stringing/unstringing bows, replacing arrows, setting up safe archery field, etc.

·     Order and care for all equipment including arrows, bows, targets, etc.


Assistant Cook

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years old.

·     Hard Worker

·     Previous kitchen experience.

·     Certification in ServSafe preferred.

2.        Job Duties

·     Fulfill assignments as given by cook.

·     Oversee kitchen staff and meal prep in shifts with cook and on cook’s days off.

·     Provide meals on time and ready to serve.

·     Improvise when needed.

·     Lifting and carrying up boxes to 50 lb up stairs and distances up to 20 yards.

 

Assistant Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years old.

·     Previous experience at Camp Blue Ridge

·     Ability to lead staff.

·     Ability to organize and direct activities.

·     Able to see the big picture.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create daily staffing sheet.

·     Assist Director in bi-weekly evaluations of classes.

·     Support and assist area directors as needed.

·     Develop and implement activities for staff morale.

·     Assist Director in checking attendance at mandatory staff events.

·     Provide constructive feedback to staff and directors to promote both individual growth and growth in the camp program.

 

Boys / Girls Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years of age.

·     Previous experience at Camp Blue Ridge as a counselor.

·     Knowledge of counseling techniques and responsibilities (as listed above under Counselor description).

·     Maturity to guide, direct, and supervise campers and counselors. Ability to keep a positive attitude among counselors and campers.

2.        Job Duties

·     Assist with pre-camp orientation and training. 

·     Make cabin assignments for counselors and campers.

·     Schedule counselor’s day off and substitute.

·     Keeps counselors accountable for the knowledge of their campers’ whereabouts at all times.

·     Can distinguish the best options for counselors and campers regarding special cabin activities or program features.

·     Serve as advisor to director in all camp programs.

·     Counsel with staff and campers regarding behavioral, safety, and emergency situations.


Canoeing Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Current Lifeguard and CPRO certification.

·     Current Small Craft or Canoeing certification.

·     Ability to patiently communicate and demonstrate skills.

2.        Job Duties

·     Teach classes, supervise and assist aquatic activities.

·     Initiate strict safety program.

·     Maintain equipment in clean, safe, workable condition.

·     Ability to carry canoe from storage to the water.


Ceramics Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Be able to use kiln.

·     Understand how to work with different types of ceramics and glazes/paints.

·     Willing to work at unscheduled hours while firing items.

2.        Job Duties

·     Work with craft director and craft instructor to ready area for camp.

·     Order ceramics as needed within the budget given.

·     Develop curriculum and instruct campers on the use of various glazes/paints and types of ceramics.

·     Responsible for firing ceramics and making sure kiln is run as needed for accurate firing.

·     Keep track of purchased ceramics during family camps and report purchases to camp store.


Counselor

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 18 years of age.

·     Ability to love and discipline. Can appropriately model behavior and use positive behavior management techniques.

·     A sense of creativity and maturity.

·     Some knowledge of child development. Can demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served.

·     Stamina and patience.

2.        Job Duties

·     Encourage spiritual and social growth in each camper.

·     Has strength, endurance, and patience to supervise and lead assigned campers in any activities of the day, 6 days per week.

·     Can assist campers in emergencies and with health, hygiene, and safety issues.

·     Can help campers carry personal belongings up 1-4 flights of stairs.

·     Assist campers with duties, skill learning, selection of cabin activities, and communication with others.

·     Instruct or assist in activity classes.

 

 Craft Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     Demonstrate experience and skill in many types of crafts.

·     Ability to patiently communicate and demonstrate skills.

2.        Job Duties

·     Supervise and direct the craft program.

·     Assist staff in crafts area with development of curriculum and instruction.

·     Periodically assess classes and provide critique to staff.

·     Create projects geared to the age, interest, and ability of campers.

·     Maintain equipment and supplies in clean, safe, working order.

·     Carry up to 30 lbs of craft material up and down stairs and a distance of 20 yards or more.


Craft Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Training and/or experience in various craft area

·     Ability to teach crafts to campers of all ages.

·     Ability to accept guidance and supervision.

·     Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control

2.        Job Duties

·     Set up crafts area during staff training.

·     Develop curriculum and teach various techniques to campers.

·     Assist in conducting initial and end-of-season inventory, storage, and keeping equipment in good condition.

·     Conduct daily check of equipment and area for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.

·     Carry up to 30 lbs of craft material up and down stairs and a distance of 20 yards or more.


Drama Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Background in acting and drama.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create drama curriculum.

·     Work with campers throughout the week to choose a play and cast.

·     Work with Program director for costuming.

·     Assist campers in presenting dramas at the end of the week.


Extreme Camp Counselor

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 18 years old.

·     Background in participating in outdoor activities such as caving, white water rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, etc.

·     Wilderness First Aid certification preferred.

2.        Job Duties

·     Assist Extreme Camp Director with planning for Extreme camp.

·     Assist with cleaning and repairing equipment as needed.

·     Assist in providing spiritual programming in mornings and evenings.

·     All other duties as listed in Counselor job description.

 

Extreme Camp Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years old.

·     Background and knowledge of outdoor activities including but not limited to caving, rock climbing, mountain biking, white water rafting, canoeing, etc.

·     Minimum Wilderness First Aid certified, Wilderness First Responder preferred.

·     Skill in planning, organizing and executing outdoor trips.

·     Be able to adjust activities for age and ability.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop plan and itinerary for Extreme camp. 

·     Work with counselors to clean and prepare/repair equipment.

·     Contact and schedule with facilities for activities such as white water rafting.

·     Plan menus.

·     Provide programs in place of campfires and camp councils at Camp Blue Ridge for spiritual development.

 

 Geocaching Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Basic understanding of geocaching.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create a geocaching curriculum using a variety of locations on camp property.

·     Walk to and check all locations for geocaches and accurate GPS markers.

·     Check and ensure all GPS units are functional and accurate.

·     Go on daily hikes as part of geocaching to find locations.


Go-Karts Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Previous experience with go-karts or other small engines.

·     Ability to work on and maintain go-karts or similar vehicles.

2.        Job Duties

·     During staff training, check and repair all go-karts as needed.

·     Maintain go-karts and track.

·     Develop curriculum for both driving go-karts and maintaining.

·     Provide safe go-kart activity both during classes and for activities.

 

Grounds

1.        Job Requirements

·     Prior grounds experience and skills.

·     Ability to work independently of others.

2.        Job Duties

·     Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

·     Maintain equipment in clean, safe, operable condition.

·     Maintain grounds shed in clean, safe, operable condition.

·     Plant and care for flowers and other plants.

·     Maintain flower beds and boxes, water, and/or weed as needed.

·     Ability to carry up to 40 lbs of equipment/supplies to work area.

·     Assist Maintenance Director.

·     Assist Program director.


Guitar Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Ability to play guitar.

·     Understanding of basic chords and strums and ability to teach.

·     Ability to work with a variety of levels at the same time.

2.        Job Duties

·     Tune and prep guitars for camp.

·     Develop progressive curriculum for improving guitar playing at a variety of levels.


Gymnastics Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Experience or training in gymnastics.

·     Skill to plan and execute group games.

·     Ability to communicate skills to campers.

·     Patience for individualized attention.

2.        Job Duties

·     Conduct classes in gymnastics.

·     Care for and properly set up equipment.

·     Maintain safe practices.


 Horsemanship Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years old.

·     Experience and skills in riding, care, and horsemanship instruction.

·     Experience and/or ability to oversee staff and facility.

·     Strong commitment to camp safety standards.

·     Must be able to demonstrate necessary skills to horsemanship staff.

·     Some training ability preferred.

·     Certified by Certified Horsemanship Association.

2.        Job Duties

·     Make caring for the horses a number one priority.

·     Maintain health and safety of horses, including during days off and weekends unless other arrangements are made.

·     Schedule horsemanship staff for teaching, chores, etc.

·     Teach classes if necessary.

·     Supervise trail rides.

·     Feed and water horses, alone if necessary. Carry 50-60 lb. bales of hay.

·     Uphold and enforce safety standards for campers and staff.

·     Maintain clean corral, barn and arena area.

·     Maintain equipment in good condition.  Carry 20-25 lbs of tack from storage to horse.

·     Participate in finding winter homes for horses as needed and/or assist with obtaining new horses when needed.

·     Maintain and replace equipment as needed.


Horsemanship Instructor

3.        Job Requirements

·     At least 17 years old.

·     Experience and skills in riding, care, and horsemanship instruction.

·     Ability to communicate and demonstrate proper horsemanship skills.

·     Strong commitment to camp safety standards.

·     Certified by Certified Horsemanship Association (preferred).

4.        Job Duties

·     Teach class

·     Supervise trail rides

·     Maintain health and safety of horses.

·     Feed and water horses. Carry 50-60 lb. bales of hay.

·     Maintain clean corral, barn and arena area.

·     Maintain equipment in good condition.  Carry 20-25 lbs of tack from storage to horse.


Housekeeping Assistant/Laundry

1.        Job Requirements

·     Ability to work independently of others.

·     Ability to work with a helpful, responsive and cheerful attitude.

2.        Job Duties

·     Assist Housekeeping Director in cleaning camp buildings.

·     Ability to carry up to 30 lbs of equipment up and down multiple flights of stairs.

·     Responsible for staff laundry, camp linens, and various camper laundry as needed.

·     Assist the Program director.

 

Jr. Chef Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Ability to cook.

·     Ability to instruct campers in cooking.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create a curriculum with daily food items for campers to cook.

·     Provide instruction in accurate measuring, mixing, and use of other kitchen tools.

·     Teach kitchen safety in the use of knives, ovens, etc.

 

Kitchen Assistants

3.        Job Requirements

·     Hard Worker

·     Previous kitchen experience preferable.

4.        Job Duties

·     Fulfill assignments as given by cook or assistant cook.

·     Lifting and carrying up boxes to 50 lb up stairs and distances up to 20 yards.

 

Lapidary Instructor

1.        Job Requirements

·     Previous experience in lapidary.

·     Experience running grinders and saws in a safe manner.

·     Ability to explain and enforce safety rules for campers.

2.        Job Duties

·     Set up lapidary equipment and order needed materials.

·     Develop curriculum for instruction.

·     Maintain all equipment in working condition and repair as needed with assistance from Maintenance Director.

·     Both explain and enforce safety rules.


Lifeguard

1.        Job Requirements

·     Must be currently Lifeguard/CPRO certified (Waterfront Lifeguard is preferred).

2.        Job Duties

·     Guard areas of lake as assigned.

·     Participate in waterfront drills.

·     Teach in areas of waterfront as needed and certified.


Maintenance

1.        Job Requirements

·     Prior maintenance experience and skills.

·     Ability to work independently of others.

·     Excellent driving record, (a bus license preferred).

2.        Job Duties

·     Operate a variety of vehicles in safe and responsible manner.  Trucks (gas/diesel), ATV’s, Garbage truck, 12-passenger vans, short bus, etc.

·     Help maintain vehicles in clean, safe, operable condition.

·     Help maintain shop and equipment in clean, safe, operable condition.  This will include carrying alone or with help large, heavy equipment.

·     Repair buildings and equipment as needed. Needs adequate skill in construction, plumbing, auto mechanics, small engines, etc.

·     Assist Maintenance Director with camp needs.

·     Assist Program Director with construction of props and maintenance of areas used by programming.

·     Remove and haul refuse using garbage truck.

·     Keep Camp Blue Ridge looking clean and maintained.

·     Cut and stack firewood.

·     Other duties as needed.

 

Model Rocketry Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Skill in the building, and firing of model rockets.

·     Ability to teach skills to campers.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop and teach class curriculum.

·     Maintain standard safety guidelines.

·     Maintain equipment and projects in working condition.

 

Mt. Biking Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Thorough working knowledge of bikes and components.

·     Ability to demonstrate and communicate subject and skill.

·     Ability to maintain equipment in good working order.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create curriculum and teach classes.

·     Supervise and lead trail rides maintaining a high level of safety.

·     Repair bikes and equipment as needed.

 

Nature Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Knowledge of nature including wild plants and animals, stream ecosystems, Virginia plant and animal life, conservation principles, etc.

·     Responsible and able to care for animals on a daily basis.

·     Commitment to caring for animals’ needs before their own.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop curriculum and teach nature classes to campers.

·     Feed and care for animals daily, including over weekends and on days off unless otherwise arranged.

·     Maintain a clean and organized nature center.

·     Manage animals in petting zoo including handling, feeding, and caring for them daily.


Nurse

1.        Job Requirements

·     Licensed in the state of Virginia as a registered nurse (or other appropriate training as approved by the camp physician)

·     Experience with children and young adults desirable.

·     Ability to originate, update, and/or monitor health care, maintain records, and implement the health care plan.

·     Current CPR and first aid certification.

2.        Job Duties

·     Responsible for the operation of the camp clinic.

·     Health practices and sanitation in the camp.

·     Be available for cabin and rest room inspection daily.


Paintball Instructor

1.        Job Requirements

·     Understanding of basic paintball principles.

·     Ability to dismantle and clean paintball markers as well as use and refill CO2 canisters.

·     Wilderness First Aid required.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop curriculum for both classes and paintball camp.

·     Provide safety briefing and safety enforcement throughout all paintball activities.

·     Scout out and clear areas for games.

·     Facilitate games with a Christian emphasis.

 

Photography/Videography Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Thorough working knowledge of digital cameras and video.

·     Ability to demonstrate and communicate subject and skill.

·     Ability to print and process camper photos.

2.        Job Duties

·     Create curriculum and teach classes.

·     Edit digital photos.

·     Photograph camp activities for future camp promotion.

·     Display campers’ pictures.

·     Be responsible for storage and maintenance of camp’s audiovisual equipment.

·     Shoot video of camp activities for end of week video.

·     Teach campers basic techniques for video shooting and editing.

 

Program Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years of age.

·     Skilled in organization, creativity, and program production; including dramas, music, and themes directed at appropriate age groups.

·     Understand and affirm the camp’s philosophy and objectives.

·     Experienced staff person at Camp Blue Ridge.

·     Skilled in people motivation, and interpersonal relationships.

2.        Job Duties

·     In collusion with other leadership staff and Camp Director, choose the summer theme.

·     Develop schedule for camp and prepare all skits, music, casting, etc. for any programming event.

·     Coordinate and direct all morning and evening programming, special meals, camp counsels, mail calls, Big Events, Sabbath programming, general materials for camper worships, and other events assigned by the director.


RC Cars Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Ability to disassemble and reassemble RC cars and assess for functionality.

·     Be able to layout and run a course.

2.        Job Duties

·     Assess and repair or replace all RC cars during staff training.

·     Create curriculum for learning parts and function of RC cars.

·     Maintain all equipment in good repair.


Receptionist

1.        Job Requirements

·     Secretarial experience and skills including typing, word-processing, handling cash transactions, duplicating, politely answering the phone, etc.

·     Skilled socially and relationally.

·     Ability to give attention to details.

2.        Job Duties

·     Type and duplicate records, forms, and instructional materials for various camp departments.  Answer phone and deliver messages.

·     Drive to camp entrance in car, 4-wheeler, or golf cart to send and obtain mail from box, sort, and see that mail is delivered. Carry mail crate up stairs from office to cafeteria.

·     Schedule general staff dining room responsibilities.

·     Track and collect guest charges, receive and process offerings, balance cash box weekly.

·     Participate in the office camper registration process.

·     Collect and process all lost-and-found items from Housekeeping.

 

Recreation Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years old.

·     Experience or training in sports, mountain biking, gymnastics, or any other area of recreation.

·     Skill to plan and execute group games.

·     Ability to communicate skills to campers.

·     Patience for individualized attention.

2.        Job Duties

·     Oversee recreational areas such as sports, mountain biking, gymnastics, etc.

·     Assist staff with preparation and maintenance of activity areas as well as any necessary repairs.

·     Provide support to recreation staff for development of curriculum and class planning.

·     Care properly for equipment.

·     Fill in for other recreation instructors’ time/day off.

 

Ropes Specialist

1.        Job Requirements

·     Maintain certification facilitating challenge course activities.

·     Skill in using Rock Climbing apparatus.

·     Experience with ropes course activities, safety and maintenance.

·     Ability to belay campers safely.

·     Ability to communicate skills.

·     Knowledge of how to use the challenge course for development of campers and staff.

2.        Job Duties

·     Ready course for summer.  Clear area and make appropriate repairs.

·     Maintain course and equipment in absolute safe working order.

·     Assess campers for ability and level of challenge with which to provide them.

·     Tailor programming to groups of campers as needed.

·     Teach skills for use of the course.

·     Systematically develop ways to promote personal and group growth.

 

 Sport Climbing Instructor

1.        Job Requirements

·     Skill in using Rock Climbing apparatus.

·     Experience with ropes course activities, safety and maintenance.

·     Ability to belay campers safely.

·     Ability to communicate skills.

·     Knowledge of how to use the challenge of climbing for camper and staff development.

2.        Job Duties

·     Ready course for summer. Clear area and make appropriate repairs.

·     Maintain course and equipment in absolute safe working order.

·     Assess and fit campers for gear based on size.

·     Choose routes and develop curriculum for the improvement of camper skills.

·     Teach skills for use of the course.

·     Systematically develop ways to promote personal and group growth.


Sports Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Ability to play a variety of sports.

·     Knowledge of basic rules of sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc.

2.        Job Duties

·     Develop curriculum for an overview of sports class or a specific sport as assigned.

·     Play sports with campers while teaching them about important aspects of being a Christian athlete including good sportsmanship and Christ-like conduct in all areas of play.

 

Store Manager

1.        Job Requirements

·     Retail purchasing, marketing, and managerial experience and skills.

·     Ability to relate to children.

2.        Job Duties

·     Can carry up to 50 lb. boxes 25 feet.

·     Display merchandise.

·     Maintain a clean, well-stocked store.

·     Sell merchandise using cash register and computer.

·     Balance store till on a daily basis.

·     Maintain adequate record of camper and staff accounts.

·     Balance store accounts weekly.

·     Refund unspent money to campers.


Swimming Instructor

1.        Job Requirements

·     Current WSI and Lifeguard/CPRO certificates.

2.        Job Duties

·     Teach classes.

·     Initiate and practice strict safety program.

·     Supervise free swims.

·     Assist with special waterfront activities.


Waterfront Director

1.        Job Requirements

·     At least 21 years of age.

·     Previous experience at Camp Blue Ridge.

·     Previous experience in aquatic activities.

·     Hold current WSI, Lifeguard, and Small Craft Instructor certifications.

2.        Job Duties

·     Guide, direct, and supervise waterfront personnel.

·     Insure safe operation of all equipment and programs on the waterfront.

·     Supervise all emergency procedures and drills pertaining to waterfront.

·     Supervise all special waterfront activities.

·     Assist waterfront instructors in establishing classes geared to the ages, interests and abilities of the campers.

·     Keep equipment and docks in good, safe, working condition.

·     Communicate with Red Cross and gather all necessary data for them.


Wilderness Survival Instructor*

1.        Job Requirements

·     Knowledge of wilderness survival techniques.

·     Ability to teach techniques to a variety of age groups.

·     Wilderness First Aid certification preferred.

2.        Job Duties

·     Prepare teaching curriculum.

·     Scout and mark sites for wilderness instruction.

·     Safely lead campers in wilderness survival activities.
