Thank you for your interest in Fit and Strong!. Fit and Strong! is an evidence-based, physical activity/ health behavior change program for older adults with osteoarthritis. The program meets three times per week for 8 weeks. Each session lasts 90 minutes. The first hour of each session includes flexibility, low-impact aerobics, strengthening, and balance exercise, followed by 30 minutes of health education for disease self management. Topics focus on managing arthritis through sustained physical activity. Class size ranges from 15-20 participants. Instructors must have either a national certification in exercise instruction or PT/PT aide licensure, OT/OT aide licensure, or a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or exercise science. Persons who do not meet one of these criteria but have successfully delivered A Matter of Balance (MOB) or the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) are also eligible to participate in instructor training. The customary instructor training lasts eight hours and reviews the program evidence, describes program components, including exercise demonstrations and health education role plays, and explains data collection and procedures to check fidelity. Instructors trained only in MOB or CDSMP complete a twelve-hour training, which provides additional training in exercise physiology, safety and provides opportunities for trainees to demonstrate exercise mastery. Sites that have offered the program include senior centers, park district facilities, independent and assisted living communities, YMCAs, and medical centers. Licensed sites may offer the program as many times per year as they like.
