The Amazing Early Years: The Continuum of Development

Indicate if the statements below are TRUE or FALSE.

Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments. Child care professionals should support children’s learning and development, by closely matching what they provide to a child’s current needs.

The Amazing Early Years: The Continuum of Development

Indicate if the statements below are TRUE or FALSE.

Children learn in the same way that they build a tower of blocks. One block goes on top of another.
The tower can stand as long as the blocks have a firm base.

Learning is interrelated. A child’s growth and development in one area influences and/or depends on development in another area. No one area of development and learning is more important than another. A child’s physical and cognitive development reinforce each other.

The Amazing Early Years: The Continuum of Development

Indicate if the statements below are TRUE or FALSE.

Each child is an individual and may meet developmental milestones a little earlier or later than his peers. The rate of development is shaped by each child’s family, culture and daily experiences.

Genetic make-up, the quality of interpersonal relationships within and outside the family, the quality of environment and experiences, and range of programs and supports available to enable optimal development and learning, impact on the pattern and timing of development. To say that a child’s development is typical implies that development is following a predictable broad pattern that is filled in with considerable cultural and individual variation.
