CYO’s philosophy is well summarized in the following quote from Pope Paul VI: “Sports, well understood and practiced...contributes to the development of the whole person because it demands generous effort, careful self-control, mastery of self and respect for others, complete commitment and team spirit. ...these values contribute to the building of tomorrow’s well-ordered society which we have characterized as the ‘civilization of love’.” The athletic programming has emphasis on sportsmanship and skill building as part of the total personal and spiritual development of each young person.

Consider the following before registering:

·         Any player who, during the current season, is playing on any public or private school team is ineligible to play CYO Basketball. Boys or Girls playing Modified Basketball are also ineligible, so please make the decision now as to whether the child will try out for another team (modified, varsity, PYB, club) OR St. Joseph’s CYO. With rosters needing to be set in early November, SJ CYO must know the numbers of players that are truly available to play for us.

·         CYO involves a significant time commitment with several practices a week and the possibility of one to two games per weekend, amounting to as many as 10 total hours. Players are expected to show up for practice (exceptions include illness or family emergencies; conflict with another activity is not a legitimate reason). Practices start in late October and the regular season runs from early December to mid-February with the possibility of postseason tournaments.

·         If a player misses more than two games or a series of practices without a legitimate reason, he or she might be dropped from the program.

·         CYO is a volunteer organization, so parents of players will be expected to assist at home games with score keeping and maintaining the facility (sweeping floor before and after games).

·         For the 3/4 grade level, parents/assistant coaches must also referee the games unless the Diocese provides one.

·         Parents, coaches and players must understand and abide by the Player Placement Policy.

Registration fees

St. Joseph’s CYO is mindful of costs and tries to keep its fees reasonable. In an effort to streamline our operations and to comply with recent financial audit requirements we will not be charging admission this year or providing concessions. Funds raised by these activities will be covered by increasing fees across all the teams. The fees are as follows:

·         Parishioners: $115 (3rd & 4), $140 (5th & 6th) and $160 (7th to 12th)

·         Non-parishioners: $130 (3rd & 4), $165 (5th & 6th) and $185 (7th to 12th)

Registration fees are non-refundable even if your child decides not to play or becomes ineligible under CYO eligibility requirements (unless injury or parental relocation for work).

Registration is considered complete when the following is received by the office:  Registration form, payment (made out to St. Joseph CYO) by check, credit card or cash, a signed Player/Parent Code of Conduct form, an emergency medical and media release, and, if you did not play in past years, a photocopy of the participant’s birth certificate.

Parishioner Status:

a)      The family must be registered in St. Joseph’s Parish prior to 9/1/19. Any family moving into the area from outside the parish is asked to furnish a letter from their previous parish stating they were active members of that Catholic parish.

b)      The participant(s) must have been a member of one of the Faith Formation programs of the parish during the 2018-19 school year and be registered in one of the programs for 2019-20. These include: Faith Formation Wednesday Program, Gathered Family Faith at Holy Spirit, Summer FF, Youth Nights or a Diocesan-approved Catholic school. Participation runs through the school year and attendance must be at least 75 percent in the program.

c)      The family and child(ren) should be attending St. Joseph’s Church for worship on weekends, and the family should be involved in the faith life of the parish.

Non-parishioners: After registration is completed and approval has been given to those who have applied, remaining spots on each team can be filled by children from other parishes (following CYO league criteria) or from another faith affiliation. There should be a letter of endorsement from the leader of that congregation stating the family is an active member of the community. This should accompany the completed registration form.

The CYO Ministry

The CYO program is considered a ministry of St. Joseph’s Church, and as such, will actively participate in the parish community. Two requirements for this year:

·      A CYO Team Mass: A Mass (most likely 5 p.m. on a Sunday night) prior to the start of the season will include players, coaches and parents attending a Mass to celebrate the beginning of the program with active participation by players as greeters, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, gift presenters, etc. More information to follow.

·      Community service: The CYO program plans to designate a weekend with a full slate of home games and collect non-perishable food items for donation/delivery to the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf and Penfield HOPE.
