Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a tutor with Action Tutoring.

To help us assess your suitability to volunteer with us as a tutor, please complete the form below in full.

Please note that if your qualifications do not match the requirements outlined below, we would still encourage you to apply. We take all previous experience into consideration, so please do include anything you think might be relevant. Once we've reviewed your answers we may then contact you to arrange a telephone interview with you, to chat through your answers and ask a question relating to the subject you've offered to tutor.

Please note the following before applying:
  •  Application questions: Please write answers to these questions in your own words, without use of AI or other assistance.

  • Commitment: the commitment is an hour a week (not including preparation time) for a duration of 10-20 weeks. Programmes will pause during school holidays. Only submit an application if you are confident that you will be able to make this commitment.
  • Qualifications: Educated to degree level, or to be studying for a degree.  Received a grade B grade (or above) at A Level (or an equivalent qualification) in the subject you wish to tutor OR a relevant subject e.g. history, politics or sociology for English tutors and physics, chemistry and economics for maths tutors. We are unable to accept applications from those currently studying A Levels. We consider all qualifications and experience, if you did not take A Levels, please add details of your other qualifications when prompted in the application form.
  • Age: We ask all volunteers to be aged 18 or over.

  • DBS check and training: All successful applicants will be required to complete an enhanced DBS criminal record check. Our policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders is available on request: pleas email safeguarding@actiontutoring.org.uk. Action Tutoring complies fully with the relevant Code of Practice and undertakes to treat all applicants for positions fairly.  Successful applicants are required to undertake full training provided by Action Tutoring. You will not be able to tutor until you have completed this training.
  • Our pupils: Action Tutoring supports young people facing socio-economic disadvantage, who are often experiencing challenging situations outside of the classroom.  We are looking for tutors who will remain empathetic and understanding to this group and support them to build their confidence and academic abilities.
  • Our programmes run over the course of the school terms. We do not work in schools during the summer holidays. Tutoring sessions take place before, during or after the school day, Monday to Friday.

  • We run face-to-face tutoring sessions, where you can meet pupils in person, in the following locations: Birmingham, Bristol, Cheshire, Coventry, London and outer borough Bromley, Merseyside, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Sussex.  We also run online tutoring with schools in these locations and surrounding areas. Tutors located across England, Wales and Scotland can apply to support on an online programme. We do not accept tutors who currently live overseas.

  • We provide additional training for our online tutors, which introduces you to our virtual classroom.  You will need to be confident using online tools and platforms and have a desktop/laptop, webcam and internet access to ensure the tutoring is a positive experience for both you and your pupils.

  • In line with the Equality Act 2010, if you require any specific adjustments for this application, the interview process, training or tutoring please get in touch with us and we will be happy to make the necessary arrangements.
