JA Student Company Awards 

APPLICATION DUE DATE: Monday, May 22, 2017 (11:59 pm Pacific Time)

The JA Student Company Awards recognize outstanding JA Student Companies in British Columbia during the 2016-2017 school year. All Student Companies who wish to be considered for a team award need to complete this application only once to be considered for the following awards: 

  • CIBC Student Company of the Year Award - Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley - $3000
  • Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award - all regions outside Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley - $3000
  • CPA Profit Performance Award - $3000
  • People's Choice Provincial Award - $3000
  • Celebrate Entrepreneurship Provincial Award - $3000 
Overview of Awards

CIBC Student Company of the Year Award - Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley

This award recognizes excellence in teamwork and cooperation, creativity and innovation, profitability and viability, and outstanding planning and operation of a Student Company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. The winning Student Company will receive an award of $3,000.

 

CPA Profit Performance Award

This award recognizes the JA Student Company that generates the most profit. A calculation of gross revenues less cost of goods sold (before taxes, salaries, bonuses, dividends and charitable donations are paid) determines the company that has generated the highest profit through their student venture. The winning Student Company will receive an award of $3000.

 

Celebrate Entrepreneurship Student Company Award

This award recognizes the JA Student Company that demonstrates the most innovation in their business. Some examples of how to be innovative in your student company include: creating a new and innovative product, distributing your product or service in a completely new way, marketing your product using cutting edge tools and media, or using a business model rarely seen in today’s business world. The winning Student Company will receive an award of $3,000.

 

The Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award

This award recognizes excellence in teamwork and cooperation, creativity and innovation, profitability and viability, and outstanding planning and operation of a Student Company of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. The winning Student Company will receive an award of $3,000.


People's Choice Provincial Award

This award will go to the JA Student Company with the most online votes based on their video submission. Qualifying videos will be put towards a public vote over a 72-hour period. The winning Student Company will receive a $3000 award and automatically be shortlisted for the Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award or the CIBC Student Company of the Year Award, depending on the region.

These awards are open to all JABC student teams participating in the JA Company Program during the 2016-2017 school year. 


Requirements


Applicants must submit the following:

  • Online application
  • Video (instructions on next page)
  • Financial report - download template
  • Photo(s) of product
  • Product sample (mailed to JABC)
Recognition

Selection committees will be formed to review submissions and select winners for these awards. In addition to the cash award which will be split equally amongst team members, each winning company will receive a certificate of recognition for their school and for each participating company member. The awards will be presented to winning companies at their local JA student celebration event. Winning companies will be notified in in late May/early June. 

Video Instructions


Introduction

Each JA Student Company applying for the team awards must submit a video as part of their application. Qualifying videos will be put forward for a public vote over a 72-hour period. You may promote your video and encourage your friends and family to vote. The video with the most votes will be awarded the People's Choice Provincial Award ($3000) and will automatically earn a spot on the shortlists for the CIBC Student Company of the Year Award Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley or the Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award, depending on the applicant's region. 


Video Requirements


Videos must be no longer than 2 minutes. You must include the following elements in your video:

  • Description of product
  • Target market and need
  • Marketing and sales strategy
  • Financials
  • Challenge faced and solution
  • Charitable donation
  • Reflection/lesson learned
You should upload your video to YouTube or hosting platform of your choice and include the link in your application (Page 4). You will be notified within a week if your video qualifies for the People's Choice contest. You will NOT be notified if you have been shortlisted for the remaining team awards. Winners of the People's Choice contest will be announced during the week of May 22nd. All other team awards winners will be announced in early June.

People's Choice Contest Voting Period: Monday, May 29, 2017 at 12:00 AM Pacific Time to Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time

Winner of the People's Choice Contest announced: Friday, June 2, 2017

JABC reserves the right to withhold a video from the People's Choice contest if it doesn't meet the minimum stated requirements and uphold the JA Brand. 

Judging Criteria


Judging Criteria for CIBC Student Company of the Year Award and the Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award

Your video is worth 50% of your total score during the judging of the CIBC Student Company of the Year Award and the Ledcor Group Regional Company of the Year Award.  The remaining 50% will be based on the following:

- Innovation of product or service
- Relevance of product or service
- Profitability and return to shareholders
- Demonstration of leadership skills or lessons
- Charitable giving
- Strategic marketing and sales strategy
- Overcoming of business challenges without affecting the bottom line
- Viability of business 

Judging Criteria for CPA Profit Performance Award

This award will go to the team who has demonstrated the greatest profit based on the financial report completed as part of this application (see page 1).

Judging Criteria for Celebrate Entrepreneurship Award

This award will be evaluated on how innovative your product or service is as demonstrated in your video and online application.
