Application Guidelines for Flea and Tick Medication Grants

This grant program is for nonprofit organizations and/or local or state governments to provide First Shield Trio┬« flea & tick preventive medication for dogs and cats.  Grantees can use this product for pets under their care that have yet to be adopted and/or for owned pets in their community.  A case of medication contains 48 doses (12 cards/ 4 individual doses per card). Approved applications will be awarded 10 cases. You will need the following information to complete this application:

  • Narrative detailing your intended use of the medication, including location and reach of your program, how recipients will be selected, program budget, and anticipated impact.
  • IRS 503(c)(3) determination letter.

Please provide a brief summary of your funding request (include whether medication will be used for pets for adoption, or detail other use)

Flea and tick medications are available in the following sizes for dogs and cats. Please indicate what amount and sizes you would like us to consider in this application in your narrative. 

Please note, 10 cases (480 individual doses) of flea and tick medication is awarded per application

  • Small dog (2.5 - 20 lbs):               Cases
  • Medium dog (21 - 55 lbs):               Cases
  • Large dog (56 - 95 lbs):               Cases
  • Extra-Large dog  (Over 96 lbs):               Cases
  • Small cat (under 9 lbs):               Cases
  • Large cat (over 9 lbs):               Cases

  1. General information about your organization, your mission, and your programs.
  2. Estimate the number of pets this grant will impact and the geographic reach of your organization.
  3. Describe your intended use of these medications answering the following questions:
    1. Will medications be used for pets in your care, pets in your community or both?
    2. Where will medications be provided? E.g. at your facility, distributed at preventive care clinics, or distributed to the general public.
    3. What is the time period the requested amount will serve your facility and/or community pets?
    4. If providing medication to community pets, will you screen pet owners for financial need? If so, how will you determine qualification?
    5. What is your average annual expense for flea and tick medication?
    6. What flea and tick product do you currently use?
    7. Do you provide heartworm prevention? If so, which product?
  4. Describe the impact these medications will make for your facility and/or pets in your community.
  5. In your last full year of operation, what percentage of your funds raised went directly to support programs? If you have been in existence less than a year, what percentage of funds raised do you expect to go directly to support pets?
