All fellowship applicants must submit a fellowship proposal, whether applying to a fellowship opening listed on or proposing a new fellowship.

Proposal tip: Longer is not necessarily better. Please be concise and clear. Help us understand your vision and be specific. If we feel it is a strong fit for our mission and goals, we will likely work with you to clarify and refine it further.

For those applying to a fellowship opening:

Note: We may have already identified at least some targeted changes, partners, projects and resources. We still ask you to complete this to understand the vision you would bring as we consider you for this fellowship.

For those proposing a new fellowship:

Statement of Understanding

Applicants are required to complete the statement of understanding.

I, the undersigned, understand and agree that the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), as program administrator, is under no obligation to select me or any other applicant for the ICFJ Knight Fellowships program. If selected to be an ICFJ Knight Fellow, I will agree to the premises and conditions set forth in the following statement:

1. The primary purpose of the fellowship is to assist the international news media in ways that are relevant and useful; I am not seeking this fellowship for purposes of tourism, foreign-news coverage, job seeking, or personal and professional reasons that are irrelevant or contrary to the fellowship’s mission. Because the publication of news articles or feature stories written by fellows during the course of their assignments for publication in-country, abroad or in the United States may jeopardize the program or affect the fellows’ visa status, special permission for any reporting or article writing during the fellowship is required from the program administrator.

2. As a precondition for participation, I agree to:

  • accept the general assignment, destination and general project assignment designated by the administrator (See #6);
  • take part in orientation on dates designated by the administrator;
  • undertake (if requested) additional preparation for my assignment, such as participating in language or tech classes, which will be made available by the program administrator;
  • work with the local media outlets and other organizations to fashion a compatible and impactful program in the designated country;
  • adhere to all ICFJ and ICFJ Knight Fellowships policies and procedures;
  • submit all program outcome and financial report required by the fellowships program, the former for possible publication by the fellowship program (the program administrator and sponsor retain the rights to the reports).

3. I understand that in order to maximize the use of fellowship resources, all travel will be on an economy-class basis and that in certain cases, living conditions may not be comparable to those of the home country from which fellows who work outside of their home country are accustomed.

4. I will be responsible for my own passport arrangements and may be asked to assist with other logistical arrangements related to my specific assignment as determined by the program administrator.

5. If I decline the specific assignment, time period or destination selected for me, I may do so without prejudice to future consideration if I have made and explained this decision for reasons that the program administrator regards as sound.

6. The program administrator will pay for fellowship-related expenses and honorarium as agreed to upon acceptance of offer by the selected fellowship candidate.

7. If I am accepted for this program, it is for a single fellowship assignment only, and there is no obligation or expectation of future participation in the program once the assignment is completed. However, I understand that I may reapply for subsequent assignments.

8. I understand and agree that, if any harm comes to me or my family during the program, neither ICFJ nor the ICFJ Knight Fellowships program can be held responsible or liable.

9. If I am selected and accept an ICFJ Knight Fellowship, I and the program administrator will enter into a final and binding agreement prior to beginning the program.

10. If I am selected and accept an ICFJ Knight Fellowship, I will permit my likeness to be used in ICFJ and ICFJ Knight promotional material. This can be in print or electronic form.

11. In applying for an ICFJ Knight Fellowship, I agree to all the conditions set forth in the enclosed application information and understand that, if I am selected, my fellowship may be terminated at any time for cause, as determined by the program administrator.

12. I confirm that all statements in this application are true.
