Initiative Description

Grounded Solutions Network is currently accepting applications for our Start-up CLT Capacity Building Initiative (CBI) which offers business and strategic planning support to community groups or new community land trust organizations.  Starting in March 2017, the eight-month business & strategic planning program will include:

  • A two-day in-person training on CLT and/or business & strategic planning related topics;
  • Access to an expert consultant to guide the business & strategic planning and writing processes;
  • Site-visits and one-on-one technical assistance from the consultant and/or  staff; and
  • A complimentary registration and travel expenses to the 2017 Intersections National Conference in Oakland, CA (pending funding availability).

Throughout the CBI, participants will explore topics related to organizational and program development as well as measuring impact. Critical issues will include:

  • Determining the primary CLT mission, which could include permanently affordable housing, urban agriculture, land conservation and/or community oriented commercial spaces;
  • Determining the core CLT functions, including stewardship;
  • Determining how the CLT will be structured, operated and governed;
  • Determining the organizational capacity (staffing, contracted services, and board of directors);
  • Assessing key partnerships for success, as well as other programs or initiatives within the service area that could compete with – or otherwise impeded– the CLT’s operation;
  • Projecting the anticipated pace and scale at which the CLT’s portfolio is expected to grow;
  • Projecting estimated annual operating budgets for the CLT for the first 3-5 years of its operations
  • Evaluating the feasibility of business plan assumptions and determining modifications, as needed, to enhance the long-term prospects for CLT’s success.

Each organization/ community group must designate a lead coordinator for the business & strategic planning process.  The “Lead” is responsible for:

  • Securing commitment to the CLT business and Strategic planning process from the organization or sponsoring entity;
  • Serving as the primary contact for the consultant and Grounded Solutions;
  • Participating in a two-day, in-person training in early 2017 (travel costs covered by Grounded Solutions);
  • Participating in a series of online exchanges;
  • Hosting the consultant and/or Grounded Solutions staff for two, multi-day site visits; and
  • Drafting the narrative for the business plan with guidance and feedback from the consultant and peers.

 We expect that the lead will need to commit a minimum of 16-20 hours each month to work on business & strategic planning tasks.
