TIFF Studio offers a unique opportunity for talented Canadians to hothouse their projects and to build their understanding of the screen industry. Since 2012, TIFF Studio has provided up to 12 local practitioners with a programme of monthly workshops with Canadian or International experts on key topics and trends. Participants have peer to peer sessions and gain privileged access to the Toronto International Film Festival.  

In 2017 the emphasis of the programme will be on writers and screen craft, including adaptations, genre and creating memorable characters. We invite screenwriters and writer-directors to apply by 5pm April 8.2017

TIFF Studio’s programmer maintains close relationships with highly regarded international filmmakers and  well-aligned industry experts. Guests have included John Sloss (Cinetic), Cassian Elwes (Producer), Chris Selak (Lionsgate), Johnnie To (Director), Danny Glover and Joslyn Barnes (L'Ouverture), Katerina Cizek (Director), Sarah Gadon (Actress), Charles Gilibert (Producer), Rachael Horowitz (Producer), Franklin Leonard (The Black List), Razvan Radulescu (Writer), Kari Skogland (Director), Andre Rouleau (Producer), Jennifer Kawaja (Producer) and many more.

TIFF Studio is an integration of public and private programming at TIFF Bell Lightbox, in order to provide participants with a fulsome curated experience. The program is a space for filmmakers to be inspired, consolidate skills, exchange ideas, and discuss challenges in a collaborative environment. This program is curated with the intention of allowing candidates to take their careers to the next level, via creative and business skill development.

All the Studio sessions will take place at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

OCTOBER - Friday 13th and Saturday 14th

Note: Industry Passes will be offered for TIFF 2017 and Canada's Top 10, 2018. A light breakfast and Lunch will be provided during the sessions.

Our 2017 programme is designed for mid-level writers and writer-directors across Canada who wish to extend their creative and business skills.

1.    Studio applications are open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. We welcome applicants from outside Ontario.

2.    Applicants must be credited as writer or director on a minimum of either one feature film and/or three short films that have played at festivals.

3.    Studio programming is geared towards feature length productions. Writers and writer-directors working in broadcast, interactive, web series and transmedia, with an interest in feature length production are welcome to apply.

4.    Applicants must be in development (second or third draft of script) on a feature length project or series, and submit a project to workshop throughout the Studio programme

5.    Applicants must commit to attending the full programme (all session dates).

a. Failure to attend two or more sessions will result in programme benefits (Festival accreditation and graduation recognition) being revoked.

b. Candidates applying from outside Toronto are responsible for their own travel and accommodation for each session.

  1. Candidates must fill out the application in full attaching itemized supporting documents as per the guidelines below to be considered

  2. Applications must be completed by applicants themselves, not by third parties (i.e. assistants, co-workers, etc)

  3. Successful candidates may be required to include a credit for TIFF Studio within the film identified in the application.


Applicants are required to submit the following supporting documents::

  1. Copy of filmography in PDF format (1 page maximum)

  2. 1 high-res headshot in color (Portrait orientation; JPG format; minimum resolution: 300 dpi)

  3. A professional biography listing any Awards, Nominations and Festivals (max 200 words)

  4. Up to three clips of previous Writer and/or Director credits, edited together and uploaded onto Vimeo

    • If you would like to password-protect your Vimeo file, please use the password: Studio17

    • Vimeo link must be downloadable and made available until May 10th, 2017

    • Demo reels, trailers and music videos will NOT be accepted.

Collectively, the total running time of your Vimeo file cannot exceed 5 minutes.
  1. A selection committee of industry professionals will review all applications and choose the successful candidates.  

  2. All candidates will be notified no later than May 6th about the status of their application

Please note: TIFF's Industry takes the applicant's confidentiality seriously and will ensure that the submitted material (excluding headshot and bio) are not shared with any third parties without the owner's explicit consent. The material will be downloaded by the Studio team and the selection committee.

The selection committee will review up to three clips (edited into one Vimeo file) that you feel best represents your previous work. It is your responsibility to adhere to the following rules when submitting material:
  1. All clips must be edited together and uploaded to Vimeo
  2. The total duration of all your submitted Vimeo file cannot exceed 5 minutes  
  3. If you would like to password protect the Vimeo file, please use the password Studio17
  4. Clips must be downloadable 
  5. Please ensure that the content is in high resolution.

Please provide information on projects you are currently working on and their stage of development. 
NOTE: the first entry must be the project you would like to submit and develop through TIFF Studio.
 For the submitted project to qualify for TIFF Studio, it must be in at least second or third draft of the script.

Your privacy and confidentiality is important to us. We will not distribute any of your content without your consent. The information on this application form will be reviewed only by the TIFF Studio Selection Team who are bound by a code of silence.
