ABOUT

TIFF Talent Lab is an artistic development programme that takes place during the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Accessing the Festival’s outstanding relationships with world-class filmmakers, the Lab provides incomparable artistic mentorship and development opportunities to a new generation of filmmakers.


Each year 10 Canadian and 10 international directors receive an exceptional professional development experience and an introduction to the global community of filmmaking. Over a four-day period, selected participants have the opportunity to interact with and learn from internationally acclaimed filmmakers and guests. Past mentors and speakers include Christine Vachon, Jane Campion, Juliette Binoche, Jim Stark, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Ivan Reitman, Atom Egoyam, Sandra Oh, Darren Aronofsky, Lone Scherfig, Mia Hansen-Love, Claire Denis, Agnieszka Holland, Jia Zhang-Ke, Wim Wenders, Alfonso Cuaron, Spike Lee, Steve McQueen, Ava du Vernay and Jean-Marc Vallee.

ELIGIBILITY

TIFF Talent Lab focuses primarily on narrative storytelling and filmmaking.


  1. This programme is open to emerging filmmakers with a minimum of two short film credits and a maximum of 1 feature film credit as director or screenwriter.

  2. International applicants are welcome. All sessions in TIFF Talent Lab are held in English. Applicants should be able to speak and understand English fluently.

  3. Only one submission per applicant. Maximum of three total submissions to Talent Lab per applicant over the last 13 years, i.e. if you have applied for TIFF Talent Lab unsuccessfully on three different occasions in the past decade, you are not eligible to apply for the 2017 Lab.

  4. Applicants must submit a continuous one-minute excerpt of one film project (short film, feature film; documentary, fiction or animation). We do not accept submissions of full-length films, demo reels, music videos and trailers. The clip must not exceed one (1) minute in length. If you have applied for TIFF Talent Lab in previous years, you must re-apply with a different film clip.

  5. Applications need to be submitted by the applicants themselves, not by third parties (i.e. assistants, co-workers etc.).

  6. Online Applications must be submitted by 5pm E.S.T. on Monday May 5, 2017

Clip Submission

  1. If you would like to password-protect your Vimeo file, you must use the password: TL2017

  2. Vimeo link must be downloadable and made available until July 1, 2017

  3. Demo reels, trailers and music videos will NOT be accepted.

  4. Collectively, the total running time of your Vimeo file cannot exceed 1 minute.

  5. Please add the information on the clip context to the description on Vimeo.

  6. Submissions of full-length films with time-codes to be played will not be considered by the jury.

  7. Please ensure that the clip includes English subtitles if the language spoken in the clip is not English.



IMPORTANT: TIFF Industry takes the applicant's confidentiality seriously and will ensure that the Vimeo links are not shared with any third parties. While in TIFF’s possession, all clips are securely stored. Access to all clips and applications is limited to the Industry programming team and selected jury members who require access in order to screen and consider applications. No duplication and "loaning" of the clips is permitted.


COMMITMENT


TIFF Talent Lab will provide the following services for selected participants:


  1. All selected participants will receive an Industry Pass for the Festival.

  2. Should the selected participants reside beyond 50km outside of the city of Toronto, TIFF Talent Lab will provide up to six nights of accommodation in a downtown hotel.

  3. Talent Lab will provide lunch on the four main days of the Lab,

  4. Participants will also be invited to two networking cocktails and one dinner.

  5. Upon request, where visas are required for participating filmmakers, TIFF will use its best efforts to assist with the visa process.


IMPORTANT: Talent Lab does not cover travel costs for selected participants. Flights, train rides etc. are the responsibility of the participants.

4. Please ensure that the clip is downloadable.
