WheatonArts

THE CREATIVE GLASS CENTER OF AMERICA

2018 Project-Based Fellowship Application

In 2018 WheatonArts will offer short term, project-based residencies within the months of September - December. These residencies were developed in response to the changing needs of artists due to continued economic

uncertainty and the increasing difficulty of leaving jobs, families and studios. This shift also responds, in part, to the strategic goal of WheatonArts to better serve artists while more fully integrating their activity with the visitor experience.

Artists are encouraged to submit proposals ranging from six-week residencies, to intermittent residencies (scheduled repeat visits), to short-term project support. Applicants are also encouraged to submit projects that include performance based work, short-term exhibits/installations and use of the Museum of American Glass resources.

Fellowships will be offered within the months of September - December, 2018. Due to the anticipated range of proposals, exact session dates will not

be determined until after the peer-review jury concludes and projects/residencies are carefully aligned with studio and housing capacity. Short-term, project-based residencies will be selected with preference for self sufficient artists/teams and the public benefit offered.

Applicants will be asked to define the general residency length desired on the

application form. We also ask that you clearly state in the artist statement, any

information or desired schedules for your proposed residency.

We encourage applicants to consider carefully how the short term, project-based structure could benefit your work. Please make clear in your proposal what your needs are. Below is a list of possibilities, based on our own research.
  • A standard 6-week residency to develop a body of work (the equivalent of 3 will be awarded).
  • Residency proposals can vary in length, or be scheduled on an intermittent basis (a series of a few visits throughout the year).
  • An installation on the grounds. (This may be of interest to former Fellows who know our site well).
  • Request for space in the Museum of American Glass for an experimental or interactive event.
  • Cross-medium/discipline collaborations could be proposed. (In this case, at least one artist should be familiar with glass processes.)
  • A community-based experience such as the creation of a piece with participation of school students, the local community, or a specific community of artists.
  • A team of artists may propose to do a one-time performance in the studio. Or, perhaps a series of three performances throughout the year.

These are just examples. We encourage applicants to design a proposal based on your artistic process, availability, family and professional commitments.

Applicants for short-term, project-based residency are no longer required to submit reference letters. Instead, you will be asked to provide two professional references with contact information.

It is preferred that the entire application, including images and supporting documents, be submitted online. If an online submission isn’t possible, please fill out the application form online and print it to include in a hard copy application. Materials will become the property of WheatonArts and will not be returned. If awarded a fellowship, your images will be used for publication. All mailed materials should be addressed to:
