Each year, Leadership Rhode Island (LRI) selects a diverse group of established and aspiring leaders to participate in a thought-provoking, 10-month community leadership core program. Participants are challenged on a variety of statewide issues presented by Rhode Island leaders and experts with on-site visits, readings, discussion groups, problem-solving exercises, and other experiential activities. The Core Program is not a starting point, but rather a process for leaders to refine and enhance their commitment to Rhode Island. The core program is the entrance to LRI's 2,000+ alumni network and a life of RI stewardship.

Leadership Rhode Island allows doors to be opened for greater corporate/nonprofit/government/organizational community involvement and visibility and helps identify where strategic alliances might be forged. LRI's core program creates additional opportunities to influence positive change and impact quality of life in the community. The purpose of the core program is to transform a highly motivated group of individuals into a network of leaders with knowledge and commitment to benefit the entire state.

Commitment to participating in Leadership Rhode Island centers on involvement. Those who choose to apply should realize the time commitment involved. Full day attendance at all sessions is required.  Participation involves a two-day overnight Orientation Retreat in January, one full-day (~8 hours) session per month from January to October (two days in June), and active participation in our Leadership in Action project outside of session days. Applicants must be able to fulfill program attendance requirements in order to graduate.

At times, participants are expected to complete preliminary assignments prior to session days.  Employer support is necessary since the program takes place during typical work hours and includes a commitment to additional time for session preparation and for optional enhancement activities.  For planning purposes, each month may include about 2-4 hours of reading/preparation time; up to 10 hours of project work; and about 2-4 hours for enhancements, which are optional.


Upon acceptance into Leadership Rhode Island, you will have several options to pay the tuition of $5,300, which covers the cost of all sessions, materials, and meals:

1) PAYMENT IN FULL – due by December 1, 2017

2) PAYMENT PLAN – requires 25% initial payment and a detailed payment schedule for the remaining tuition, to be paid in full by August 1, 2018.

Acceptable forms of payment are cash, money order, check or cashier’s check payable to Leadership Rhode Island. Online payments are also acceptable and include a 3% card processing fee. The $5,300 covers all program costs and materials, including meals and all expenses associated with the retreat. Each participant must make a personal commitment of the initial $300 by December 1, 2017. Tuition is non-refundable.

Tuition Assistance

LRI has a tuition assistance program based on demonstrated financial need. Tuition assistance requests are considered independently of class applications. Please contact Michelle DePlante at mdeplante@leadershipri.org for Tuition Assistance forms. All Tuition Assistance forms must be submitted by the application deadline, September 24, 2017. No tuition assistance requests can be accepted after the application deadline. Requests for assistance will be kept confidential and reviewed separately from the class applications. All recipients of tuition assistance are expected to donate two (2) hours of their time to LRI prior to graduation, plus ten (10) hours within one year of graduation.

Participants are selected based on information provided on the application, two letters of reference, and a personal interview. Please allow ample time to prepare the application and to obtain required materials to meet our deadline of September 24, 2017. Applications are available on the web at www.leadershipri.org.

Leadership Rhode Island’s Selection Committee seeks to identify those most likely to demonstrate leadership abilities for the long-term benefit of our state. The core program is not a starting point, but rather a process for emerging and established leaders to refine and enhance their commitment to Rhode Island. The Selection Committee is made up of LRI alumni who select a group of approximately 65-75 participants. The committee looks first to select individuals based on their personal leadership accomplishments and/or future potential. Then, the committee seeks to create a well-balanced class, with an emphasis on broad representation of occupational, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, geographic areas, and community interests. All applicants will be notified of the Selection Committee’s decision before December 2017.
