Application Details

Regular projects have the commitment and financial contribution of at least one market partner such as broadcaster, distributor, sales agent, online platform, or eligible film board or film institute* who must attend the Hot Docs Forum to co-present the project; Additionally, we accept successful crowdfunding campaigns as a trigger (please check our FAQ page for more details); A minimum of approximately 20 per cent (but no more than 75 per cent) of its financing in place. The existing financing must include arms-length, third-party monies from the marketplace. In Canada, the existing financing can also include but can not be solely made up of federal and provincial tax credits.

Rough Cut are projects (broadcast or feature-length) currently at a rough-cut stage that have not yet secured market financing (i.e. broadcaster or distributor, etc.). A trailer or scene selects must be submitted at the time of application.

If your project fits into two categories please select the one that is most relevant.

Interactive Web Only are products and services on computer-based systems which respond to the user’s actions by presenting content such as text, graphics, animation, video, audio etc.

Cross Media projects are media property, service, story or experience distributed across media platforms using a variety of media forms such as broadcast, online, and mobile

Non-Traditional Distribution includes mobile, online, location-based, streaming, bit-torrent, or an amalgam of approaches that might make sense. Please provide more information in the space below.

Detail your audience and include how you intend to market to them. Please outline your own outreach plan and that of any distribution or broadcast partners you may have. How will you build a community around your film?

Please define your goals for the exhibition plan of the film. Is it intended for theatrical release, Broadcast, DVD, Online, or a combination of the above? What commitments do you already have in place with regards to distribution (e.g. a first run with a French Broadcaster)? What do you hope to achieve in the distribution of your film.

This is any interactive elements you might have for your project. For example a website, interactive documentary, version for a mobile devise etc. Please define the following key elements – the story, the user experience, the business model and the technology plan. How will the film compliment the site and vice versa. We expect every project submitted to have an expression of digital media either robust or small.
