Overview

Business Volunteers Maryland connects people and businesses with nonprofits looking for support. We direct individuals to appropriate volunteer opportunities, and we help companies invest in their employees by creating and managing successful corporate volunteer programs and developing civic leaders. Business Volunteers' GIVE Fellowship is designed to raise awareness among the next generation of civic leaders about the growing need for volunteerism in their community. The curriculum educates fellows on key community issues, inspires them to make a meaningful difference, and helps them develop the necessary skills for success.

Program Goals
  • To introduce young professionals to Baltimore area nonprofits/community needs
  • To develop new skills and create strong civic leaders
  • To build a personal and professional network
  • To engage young professionals in volunteerism
  • To create ambassadors of civic leadership, volunteerism, and business involvement

Fellowship Experience


The fellowship is a nine-month experience that begins in February and ends in November. The core components include monthly learning seminars, volunteer experiences, and networking events that enhance personal and professional development. There is also a Leadership Action Project that is designed to create a stronger cohort experience and deeper community impact while strengthening leadership and professional skills.

Attendance


Attendance is mandatory at all workshops including the orientation in February.  Fellows must also attend a minimum of two networking/social events throughout the fellowship, dates TBD. Participants who miss more than 2 unexcused workshops may be dismissed from the program. Please review the dates/times above to ensure you can be in attendance. Tuition is non-refundable for participants who are dismissed or who voluntarily withdraw.


Tuition


Tuition for participation in Business Volunteers' GIVE Program is $1,500. If selected, you will be invoiced for tuition, which covers all program expenses and learning materials. We recommend that participants personally contribute at least $250 of this fee and encourage company sponsorship of the remaining portion of the fee to demonstrate personal investment and company support of professional development. 


We offer a limited number of Jim Brinkley scholarships which support the cost of a program fee for deserving civic leaders that would not otherwise be able to participate. There is a separate scholarship application that must be completed. You should submit your scholarship application after filling out this application.


A payment plan may also be arranged after acceptance to the program.


Time Commitment 

Required monthly workshops will take place one Wednesday a month from 8:30-11:30AM.  Outside of scheduled meetings, anticipate spending an additional 2-7 hours a month on GIVE related activities. These additional hours are more flexible.


Applicant Criteria

The typical GIVE Classmate meets the following criteria:

·         Is between the ages of 25 and 40

·         Lives within Central Maryland and works in the Greater Baltimore area

·         Is a high performing career professional with leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential

·         Is passionate about engaging in the community and giving back through service. 


Application & Selection Process

 

GIVE fellows are selected through a competitive application, interview and selection process.  A cohort of up to 40 diverse and accomplished professionals are selected based on their career accomplishments, commitment to creating positive change, and an interest in taking on a leadership role to address community issues. 

 

The application process includes:

·         Completion of an online application form

·         A professional reference (a form will be sent following submission of application)

·         Application agreement signed by the participant and employer (a form will be sent following submission of application). See below for further information. 

·         Phone interview conducted by a member of the selection committee. 


Application Agreement- Employer Authorization

 

Because the GIVE program requires participation during the conventional workday, we ask applicants to discuss and obtain agreement on the program requirements, including the time commitment, with their supervisors before beginning the application process. 

The Application Agreement is our way of ensuring that applicants' organizations will provide the work release time for participation in the program.  If you are the senior ranking person in your organization, please sign your own name in the section for authorization.

We will collect all pertinent data to contact your supervisor in the online application. 

Interview

Applications are reviewed by a Selection Committee composed of Business Volunteers staff members and GIVE Advisory Board members. After each application is carefully reviewed, selected applicants are invited for an interview with a member of the Selection Committee. 

 

Each year the Selection Committee strives to create a cohort that is diverse in experience, industry, and demographics.  In considering the diversity of the cohort and the number of applications received, qualified candidates are not always accepted.  

Deadlines and Timeline

·         Program applications must be submitted by Friday, November 4th. The online application will close at 11:59 pm on November 4th.

·         Phone interviews will be conducted in late November/early December. 

·         Notice of acceptance into the program will be received by December 31, 2017.

·         Payment must be received by January 31, 2018.
