2018 JA British Columbia Individual Awards

Please complete this application form once for the following awards:

  • Dr. Donald Rix Inspiring Business Excellence Scholarship - $2,500 
  • JABC Award for Excellence and Leadership - $2,500 
  • Jan Bell Irving Award for Women's Leadership - $2,500 
  • The Keg Spirit Foundation Next Generation Leaders Forum Award – expense-paid trip to attend the international NGL student conference Summer 2018

Candidates must:

  • Not have received this award previously
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Complete the online application in full.  This includes submitting two letters of recommendation from a teacher (preferably from the applicant’s JA teacher, counsellor or post-secondary professor/instructor); an updated resume; and a signed media release form
  • Display proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Be prepared to attend a brief interview in person or by phone
  • Provide a signed statement indicating how the funds will be used before they are released by JABC


Overview of Awards

Dr. Donald Rix Inspiring Business Excellence Scholarship

Dr. Donald Rix was one of British Columbia's leaders in the field of life science. He was a community volunteer, philanthropist, angel investor, and mentor to countless young entrepreneurs. He was an enthusiastic supporter of youth, education and entrepreneurship. Dr. Rix was inducted into the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame in 2006 and was an inaugural contributor to the building of the Hall of Fame wall in the convention centre. Through an endowment fund created by Dr. Rix, JABC offers an annual scholarship to a qualifying indigenous, rural or immigrant high school student who has demonstrated significant growth or improvement in business excellence skills, improvement in learning skills, demonstrated leadership and/or entrepreneurial skills. 


To be eligible for this award, you must:

·         Be a Grade 10, 11 or 12 indigenous (self-identifying) OR rural (all students living outside Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Greater Victoria) OR immigrant student (born outside of Canada)

·         Have participated in a JA Company ProgramJA Titan or Be Entrepreneurial during the past two years

·         Submit reference letters that comment on your potential as a future business professional, leader or entrepreneur as well as any particular challenges you may have encountered, particularly as a rural, indigenous or immigrant student, and how you have dealt with these challenges. For indigenous applicants, it is recommended you obtain a letter from an indigenous organization

 

JABC Award for Excellence and Leadership

Leadership skills may be acquired and demonstrated in many different ways.  This award recognizes achievement in the development of effective personal and business management skills. 

To be eligible for this award, you must:

·         Have participated in a JA Company ProgramJA Titan or Be Entrepreneurial during the past two years

·         Have demonstrated leadership skills


Jan Bell-Irving Award for Women's Leadership

This award’s purpose is to inspire and encourage young women to lead at the highest levels, with heart.  It recognizes a female Junior Achiever who demonstrates the ambition to lead and the ability to do so with collaboration and kindness. 

To be eligible for this award, you must:

·         Be Female

·         Have participated in a JA Company ProgramJA Titan or Be Entrepreneurial during the past two years

·         Have demonstrated leadership skills


The Keg Spirit Foundation Next Generation Leaders Forum Award Eligibility

This award recognizes significant progress made by individual students in developing networking and communication skills. 

To be eligible for this award, you must:

·         Have participated in a JA Company ProgramJA Titan or Be Entrepreneurial during the past two years

·         Demonstrate basic networking strategies and be interested in current affairs and business-related topics

·         Be willing and able to fully participate in the JA Canada's Next Generation Leaders' forum scheduled for Summer 2018 (date and location to be announced)

·         Be capable of travelling on your own

The winning students will receive an award to attend the Next Generation Leaders Forum. The award covers conference registration, travel, accommodation and meals. As there is no cash substitute for this award, it is expected that winners will make every effort to attend. In the event the winner is unable to attend, JABC will select an alternate award candidate.  Winners will be notified in late May/early June.

Reference letters should be from from a teacher (preferably from your JA teacher), counsellor, or post-secondary professor. They should comment on your potential as a future business professional, leader or entrepreneur.  

If you are applying for the Donald Rix Inspiring Business Excellence Scholarship, please outline any particular challenges you have faced as an Indigenous, Immigrant or Rural student.  If you are an indigenous applicant, we recommend you obtain a letter from an Indigenous organization.
