For youth living in Dakota and Washington Counties 


Tree Trust’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is an up-to-nine-week paid work experience designed to help young people learn and practice basic job skills. All jobs pay $9.65 per hour and have an average of 20 scheduled hours per week from June 18 to August 17 (exact start and end dates may vary by county).
Conservation Crew
Work outdoors on a supervised team with seven other young people to complete physically challenging projects like staircases and retaining walls for parks and community spaces. Applicants must be willing to work in all types of summer weather, must work well with a team, and be committed to coming to work on time on scheduled days. Transportation is provided from designated pick-up points for most work sites, however you should be prepared to find your own transportation to and from the work site each day if that is not the case. 
Conservation Crew Requirements:  
  • Be able to work on a crew with a ratio of one staff to eight youth
  • Be outside for 8 continuous hours
  • Be able to stand for up to two continuous hours
  • Be able to lift 15 pounds above the head

*Available in Dakota County only, for those 16 and older
Individual Site
Work in a school, library, non-profit or community-serving organization doing clerical, custodial, child care or customer service work. Applicants must be able to follow directions and work independently. There are a very limited number of these positions available and youth must be at least 16 years old.  Transportation is not provided to individual sites.

Individual Site Requirements:  
  • Be able to work independently for up to 1.5 hours
  • Be able to work with a ratio of one staff to up to eight youth
  • Be outside for eight continuous hours
  • Be able to stand for up to two continuous hours
  • Be able to lift 25 pounds

Work Schedule
  • Crew workers have a set schedule of 2 days one week and 3 days the next week, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
  • Individual Site workers’ schedules will vary by site.
To be eligible for the program, you must meet all of these requirements:
  • Be at least 14 years old and less than 22 years old on June 18, 2018.
  • Have low family income, special needs and/or other risk factors. 
  • Live in Dakota, suburban Hennepin, or Washington County (not Minneapolis or St. Paul. See below).
