To Portland Commissioner Dan Saltzman:
The City of Portland is going to remove the bike lanes on Southeast Powell Boulevard and 26th Avenue — a critical piece of bike safety infrastructure located directly outside Cleveland High School. The very presence of this bike lane makes the street safer by slowing down traffic and providing dedicated space for bikes through one of Portland’s most crash-prone intersections.
To remove this bike lane would be irresponsible. There is no excuse to increase the risk of death or injury each day: necessarily threatening people riding bikes, students, pedestrians, and motorists as well. We’ve made great headway over the years in making our streets safer for everyone, and we can’t afford to backpedal on our progress now.
We call on Portland Commissioner Dan Saltzman, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and the Oregon Department of Transportation to take the necessary steps to save the bike lanes on SE Powell & 26th.
