TEDxMemphis Speaker Application

**Applications due December 3, 2018

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where technology, entertainment and design converged, and today covers almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx

program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TEDxMemphis

TEDxMemphis launched in 2015 to bring local ideas to the global TED stage. For each annual conference, we choose a roster of speakers to share TED talks with a Memphis audience, while professionally filming those talks to distribute locally and throughout the TED network.

Have an Idea Worth Sharing?

TEDxMemphis is searching for speakers with talks that represent the most innovative ideas coming out of Memphis. We want our next conference to be full of engaging, dynamic, thought-provoking TED talks. A great TED talk starts conversations. When people describe TED Talks you’ll hear words like “surprising,” “inspirational,” “provocative,” or “illuminating.”

Because TEDxMemphis has limited space for speakers but a long list of potential candidates, we ask those interested in speaking to complete an application. Our TEDxMemphis committee reviews all submissions and chooses a group of TED talks that we think will make for a compelling conference. We are deeply committed to presenting a diverse range of talks from diverse speakers, so we carefully curate the programs to reflect this.

We should also note that TED Talks are required to be shorter than 18 minutes, and we hope to have Talks of varying lengths. Some of the most compelling TED Talks are just a few minutes long.

Ready to Apply?

If you’ve got a great idea for a TED Talk, fill out this application and submit by December 3, 2018.

Tell Us About Your TED Talk
**Before submitting your talk, please remember**
TED Talks are not presentations about your work or organization -- they are idea driven talks with broad application (beyond a local audience). When telling us about your talk, start with what your exciting idea is, then explain how you will share that idea from the stage. We HIGHLY recommend you watch or listen to a few TED Talks before submitting an application, to become familiar with the concept.

Video Examples

Videos samples are not required but help the selection committee grasp your public speaking abilities. The video you submit does not have to be of your proposed talk; it can be an existing video of you speaking (at a conference, being interviewed, at another speaker event). Videos also do not need to be professional quality; you could film yourself giving a portion of your proposed talk using your phone. This gives the committee an idea of your personality and speaking style. Please upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube and share as a link.

Supporting Materials

Feel free to share any other information you feel is relevant and may help the selection committee better understand who you are and what your idea is: links to blogs, books, articles, social media, etc.
