TIFF-CBC Films Screenwriter Award Application

CBC Films (“CBC”) and Toronto International Film Festival Inc. (“TIFF”) have created an award for screenwriters of theatrical length screenplays, and who are from underrepresented communities - who identify as a woman, or a visible minority, or Indigenous, or a person with a disability (the “Award”).



The Award shall be a cash award of Fifteen Thousand Canadian Dollars ($15,000 CAD), and will be given to the eligible applicant who submits the selected screenplay.

Eligible applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Be residents of Canada, who are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  2. Be over the age of majority in their province of residence.

  3. Have received a writer or director credit on a feature film which has screened in Official Selection in at least one of the following:

    1. International Film Festivals: Annecy Animation Festival, Berlin, Busan, Cairo, Cartagena, Cannes, IDFA, Karlovy Vary, Locarno, Mar del Plata, Marrakesh, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, Palm Springs, Rio, Rotterdam, San Sebastian, Shanghai, Stockholm, Sundance, Sydney, SXSW, Telluride, Venice or

    2. Canadian Film Festivals: Black Film Festival Montreal, Fantasia, Female Eye, Hot Docs, imagineNative, Nouvel Cinema, Toronto IFF, Ottawa Animation Film Festival, ReelAbilities, Reel Asian, ReelWorld, St. John’s Women's Film Festival, Vancouver IFF.

  4. Demonstrate ownership of all underlying rights to their Submission.

  5. Identify as a woman, or a visible minority, or Indigenous, or a person with a disability (in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities).


Submissions must be original works in English, written solely by the Applicant. Adaptations of books, theatre or magazine articles are eligible, provided the applicant has secured the necessary legal rights. There is a limit of one submission per applicant. 

In order to be considered for the Award, the Applicant must submit all of the application materials listed below via the online application by Midnight on Wednesday December 5, 2018

The following materials together form the "Application Package":

(a) a completed online Application Form, with digital signature;

(b) a completed online Submission Release Form, with digital signature;

(c) additional information about your project, including (i) the title, (ii) the genre, (iii)
one sentence describing the intended target audience, (iv) the proposed
production budget (approximate), (v) any key attachments in place (e.g., director,
producer, proposed cast), and (vi) a statement of no more than 150 words
that outlines the progress of the project to date and that identifies current
challenges and the approach that will be used to respond to these challenges in
the next stage of development; and

(d) the project you are submitting for consideration (the “Submission”),
accompanied by a logline that encapsulates the story in less than 60 words
(“Synopsis”). Submissions must be in the form of an 85- to 120-page
feature-length screenplay in “script format standard.” The cover page should
include only the project title and no other identifying markings.

Application Packages must be uploaded via Form Assembly by Midnight on Wednesday December 5, 2018. The recipient of the Award will be announced online at both www.cbc.ca/breakingbarriers/ and www.tiff.net in the first quarter of 2019.

Official Selection Eligibility
Please identify the film(s) you've been credited on that have played in Official Selection at any of the following festivals (maximum of 3)

*Please note that the film must be feature length. No exceptions.

Applicants must be either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident status may be requested. Proof of citizenship or permanent resident status may be requested. 

Applicants must identify as a woman, a visible minority, Indigenous, or as a person with a disability. Please select one or more of the following self-identification categories. Privacy legislation protects the personal information you voluntarily provide on the application form.

The Submission (including the Application Form, the Submission Release and any other materials linked to, or submitted by you) and Synopsis, (collectively, the "Application Package") were submitted by you for review and consideration for the TIFF-CBC Screenwriter Award, provided by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation ("CBC") and Toronto International Film Festival Inc. ("TIFF")

You Understand that the execution of this release is necessary before CBC Films and TIFF will review the Application Package and you represent and agree as follows:

1. You are the owner and author of the Application Package. You have the full and exclusive right to submit the Application Package and no other person or corporation has any right, title or interest in the Application Package inconsistent with such right. The Application Package is not defamatory and does not infringe upon or violate the privacy rights, copyrights, trademarks, publicity or other intellectual or proprietary rights of any third party.

2. CBC and/or TIFF have not made any promise or representation to you about the Application Package, and have no obligation to use the Application Package in any way. There is no agreement, written or oral, express or implied, between you and CBC and/or TIFF concerning the Application Package, other than this release.

3. CBC and TIFF and their representatives will give the Application Package only the consideration that CBC and TIFF in their sole and absolute discretion determine is appropriate.

4. CBC and TIFF do not accept any obligation of confidentiality with respect to the Application Package. CBC and TIFF have the right to copy, use, and distribute the Application Package for the purpose of its evaluation and review. You have kept a copy of the Application Package. There is no obligation to return the Application Package to you and no party will be responsible for any loss or damage to the Application Package.

5. CBC and/or TIFF may have already and may in the future receive or independently develop materials similar to the Application Package, and shall have the unrestricted right to use these similar materials, and you will have no right or recourse for use of these similar materials.
