Introduction

Welcome to the Courageous Sailing Youth Program lottery registration. If you would like to have your children participate in our Summer Youth Program, this is the first step. While we would like to have every student participate, we are limited in how many children we can accommodate. In order to give everyone a chance to participate in our Summer Youth Program, we use a lottery system. By providing the information requested in this form, you will be entering your children in our lottery for this summer's youth program, specifically our Steps To Lead program. This form should be filled out by a parent or guardian and should take roughly 15 minutes to complete.

The lottery registration is open from March 1 to March 15.  Selection letters and emails will be sent out by April 1.  More information about the Summer Youth Program can be found by clicking here. You'll find answers to frequently-asked questions, descriptions of our classes, and details on the lottery process, as well as program schedules, fees, and scholarships.

This form is used to enter the lottery for the Steps To Lead program at Charlestown, Jamaica Pond, and UMass Boston. Registration for Swim Sail Science is limited to students who attend the Harvard-Kent, Warren Prescott, Eliot, or Orchard Gardens elementary schools. For information on how to register for Swim Sail Science, please contact Ashton at ashton@courageoussailing.org

For additional assistance, please call the Courageous Sailing office at 857-452-1763, 10 AM - 4 PM, M-F or email ashton@courageoussailing.org.

Not a Parent/Guardian?

You must be the parent or legal guardian of the child/children to enter them into the Summer Youth Program lottery. If there is some extenuating circumstance, please contact Courageous Sailing directly at 857-452-1763 or email ashton@courageoussailing.org.

Parent/Guardian Information

This should reflect the contact information of the person completing this form on behalf of the child or children being entered into the Summer Youth Program lottery.  Lottery results and any subsequent communications will be sent to the home and email addresses listed below.

Please note that in order to participate in the Courageous Summer Youth Program (SYP) at Jamaica Pond you must reside in the City of Boston. There is no restriction for participating at any other Courageous SYP sites.

Family Demographics

Sharing this information is optional. It will be kept confidential and will be grouped together to report overall program demographics to our funders who want to know who is attending our programs. We appreciate your understanding and assistance. Thank you.

This information is required if you are interested in scholarship aid.

Scholarship Information

Courageous Sailing is committed to providing high-quality summer sailing programs to children of Greater Boston regardless of ability to pay. Scholarships are readily available for all who qualify. Extenuating circumstances are always taken into consideration should a family choose to share them with our staff.

  • Full scholarships ($0 class fee) are available to families on government assistance or with a household income of < $70,000.
  • Partial scholarships (~50% discount) are available to those with a household income between $70,000 and $140,000.
  • All siblings are 10% off.

Please Note: If your income puts you in a fee bracket that you can’t afford, we will work with you so that your children will be able to attend.

To complete your scholarship application, provide Courageous Sailing with one or more of the following by April 30:

  • Most recent Federal Income Tax Form 1040 (first page only, SSN# blacked out)
  • Proof of being a government assistance beneficiary (ex. public housing, etc.)
  • Optional: Attach a separate page detailing any other information that may be helpful in determining financial need and extenuating circumstances.
Instead of emailing, documents should be securely uploaded here.

Scholarship materials will be reviewed solely by the Director of Youth Programs and Outreach, the Executive Director and/or their administrative assistants. After review, these sensitive documents will be destroyed immediately. For extra security, please black out Social Security numbers on all documents you upload to Courageous.

The registration and lottery process for admittance to the Courageous Sailing Summer Youth Program is “Need-Blind.” This means that admission, in no respect, is based on ability to pay.

Guide

Selecting Class Preferences

  1. Read the class descriptions provided on the Courageous website.

  2. On the following pages, choose up to four sessions, in order of preference, of the class/step that is the right fit for each of your children. Students will be assigned by lottery to one choice or waitlisted. Courageous Sailing reserves the right to change the course level of a student based on the previous summer's progress report or sailing ability as indicated in this lottery entry form.

*Parents of returning sailors:  Please reference the email you should have received indicating which Step your child is eligible for.

**Note: It is highly recommended that, wherever possible, you select multiple course preferences (up to four) for each child entered in the lottery, as you may not get into your first choice of class. If you do not have alternate choices, you risk being shut out of the program entirely.

  3. This form must be submitted by March 15 at midnight.

Reminders and Clarifications

  1. No prior sailing experience is necessary to apply for Step 1. All students must be at least 8 years old by the first day of class.

  2. Jamaica Pond classes are limited to Boston Residents only. This is because the program is almost entirely underwritten by the City of Boston, Boston tax-payers, and Boston-centric donors. We thank you in advance for your honesty and respect of this rule. Courageous Sailing will require participants in the Jamaica Pond program to provide proof of residency. Click here to learn more about classes at JP.

Jamaica Pond One (JP1): A one-week sailing program that is open to new and returning Courageous Sailing students. It is a mix of beginner sailors between the ages of 8-14.

    Jamaica Pond Two (JP2):
A two-week sailing program for beginner and intermediate sailors who have spent at least 1-2 summers sailing with Courageous and are at least 10 years old. This is an opportunity for returning sailors to more intentionally grow their boat handling skills on the RS Quests.

  3. For students moving to Charlestown from Jamaica Pond, UMass, or Camp Harbor View: Students who have completed at least 1 year at JP, UMB, or CHV are eligible for Step 2. Students who have completed more than 1 year at JP or CHV may be eligible for a more advanced Step. Please contact ashton@courageoussailing.org to determine which advanced Step your child is eligible for.

  4. Step 2: Beginner Sailing at Charlestown is limited to returning Courageous students only. Step 2 classes are limited to students who have taken at least one week of Step 1, Swim Sail Science, or participated in our sailing program at Camp Harbor View, Jamaica Pond or UMass Boston in a previous summer. Outside applicants are admitted on a case by case basis depending on availability. Returning Courageous students who took Step 1 need not have passed a sail checkout to apply for Step 2.

  5. To enter Step 3, 4, or 5, returning students must be recommended to move up on last summer's progress report. Parents of returners, please refer to the email sent to you indicating which step your child is eligible for. Questions or concerns? Contact Ashton at ashton@courageoussailing.org or call 857-452-1763.

  6. Steps 3, 4, and 5 are open to students new to Courageous, but sailing experience is necessary. Individuals who may have learned to sail somewhere other than Courageous are permitted to apply for Steps 3, 4 or 5. Written permission from the Education Director is required for outside applicants. Contact Ashton at ashton@courgeoussailing.org.

Student #1

If your child participated at Jamaica Pond last year and is 10 years old or older, they are eligible for the following classes: (1) Jamaica Pond One (JP1)--1 week class; (2) Jamaica Pond Two (JP2)--2 week class; or (3) Step 2: Beginner Sailing at Charlestown--3 week class. If they have participated at Jamaica Pond for 3+ years they may be eligible for Step 3: Intermediate Sailing at Charlestown. If you are applying for an advanced step in Charlestown, we recommend you also include classes at Jamaica Pond for your lower-preference choices. This way, if a spot isn't available in an advanced class at Charlestown, your child may still receive a spot with Courageous this summer at Jamaica Pond.
If your child participated in Swim Sail Science (our 5-week sailing and academics program) last year, please sign your child up for Step 2.
If you are applying for your child to participate in Step 2 for the first time, we recommend that your first and second class preferences are for Step 2 (one of the three-week sessions per choice). Your child has a much better chance of receiving a spot in one of the two Step 2 sessions if you apply for both. Also, we recommend that you mark Step 1 sessions for the rest of your class preferences so that your child may receive a spot in Step 1 if a spot is not available in Step 2. Otherwise, your child may not receive a spot at Courageous this summer.

Class Preference One

Step 2 is available only for students who have participated in Step 1, SSS, JP, UMB or CHV sailing previously.

Class Preference Two

Step 2 is available only for students who have participated in Step 1, SSS, JP, UMB, or CHV sailing previously.

Class Preference Three

Step 2 is available only for students who have participated in Step 1, SSS, JP, UMB, or CHV sailing previously.

Class Preference Four

Step 2 is available only for students who have participated in Step 1, SSS, JP, UMB, or CHV sailing previously.

Extended Day provides parents the option to drop off their child between 8AM and the start of program (8:45AM), and/or pick their child up between the end of program (3:30PM at all sites) and 5PM. It costs $50 for the entire class ($25 for partial scholarship recipients, $0 for full scholarship recipients).

Student #1 Swimming Ability

While we do have a strict life jacket policy and recreational swimming is not a regular part of our programs, for safety reasons Courageous Sailing requires that all youth program sailors be able to swim 75 feet (any stroke, even dog-paddle) and tread water, unassisted, for 90 seconds.

As proof of your child's or children's swimming ability, a photocopy of one of the items listed below must be submitted by June 15:

* YMCA: Certificate of completion for Fish Level and/or Level 5 or above
* Red Cross: Certificate of Completion for Level V or above
* Boy/Girl Scouts: Swimming or Lifesaving Merit Badge
* Courageous Sailing Swim Form
Blank proof of swimming forms may be downloaded at bit.ly/swimformcourageous

If your child has participated in a Courageous Sailing program in the past, there is no need to submit another swim form as we should have it on file.
