Dear School Board Directors,
I am an Oakland resident and leader and I urge you to make responsible and student centered budget reductions.
I believe:
Fixing Oakland’s school budget will be hard. But failing to fix it will be harder. The district must make the necessary reductions to avoid bankruptcy and a state takeover.
Smarter spending is an opportunity to invest in what is most helping students. All cuts must demonstrate a “students first” approach.
Oakland students, families and community are depending on you to be good stewards of OUSD’s limited financial resources. I urge you to use your authority to ensure these three things when you make your final vote on January 30th:
- Prioritize funding school sites: Our community must see evidence that every possible dollar follows students. Keep cuts away from school site budgets.
- Strategic redesign of the central office: Drive the redesign of the central office by limiting central office expenses to the areas that are 1)legally required, and 2) support a limited number of strategic central initiatives that have the greatest impact on students and schools.
- Smarter spending practices: Impact on student outcomes should drive the rationale for future budget decisions. The district must expect that all staff establish clear goals, measurable outcomes, and demonstrable impact on student outcomes.
The community is counting on you to lead the district to better student outcomes and financial stability through stronger strategic use of our limited resources.

Soy un residente y líder de Oakland y los insto a que realicen reducciones presupuestarias responsables y enfocadas en los estudiantes.
Yo creo que:
Arreglar el presupuesto escolar de Oakland será difícil. Pero no arreglarlo será aún más difícil. El distrito debe hacer las reducciones necesarias para evitar su quiebra y una toma de control estatal.
Gastar inteligentemente es una oportunidad para invertir en lo que más ayuda a los estudiantes. Todos los recortes deben demostrar que se enfocan en "los estudiantes primero"
Los estudiantes, las familias y la comunidad de Oakland dependen que ustedes sean buenos administradores de los limitados recursos financieros del OUSD. Les insto a que usen su autoridad para garantizar estas tres causas cuando realicen su voto final el 30 de enero:
- Priorizar la financiación de los planteles escolares : Nuestra comunidad debe ver evidencia clara de que cada dólar posible está respaldando a los estudiantes. Se deben mantener los recortes lejos de los presupuestos de los planteles escolares.
- Rediseñar estratégicamente la oficina central : Impulsar el rediseño de la oficina central al limitar sus gastos en las áreas que 1) lo requieran legalmente, y 2) se limiten a respaldar solo a aquellas iniciativas estratégicas centrales que tengan el mayor impacto en los estudiantes y las escuelas.
- Prácticas de gasto más inteligentes : El impacto en los resultados de los estudiantes debe impulsar la justificación de futuras decisiones presupuestarias. El distrito debe esperar que todo el personal establezca metas claras, resultados medibles y un impacto demostrable en los resultados de los estudiantes.
La comunidad cuenta con ustedes para que conduzcan al distrito a mejorar los resultados de los estudiantes y la estabilidad financiera, mediante un uso estratégico más sólido de nuestros limitados recursos.
