Whether negotiating access with a local militia, discussing community engagement, victim care or convincing colleagues to follow security procedures, how we communicate is key. The more we understand about the culture of who we are talking to and how we are perceived within that culture the more effective our engagement will be.

In this workshop Ahmed Abouzaid and John Fisher, experienced police negotiators, will talk about how to do a cultural horizon scanning, build a relationship and, when things go wrong, how to deescalate the situation using advanced communication skills.  While not a ToT, the workshop will aim to develop skills and knowledge for both yourself and sharing with your team. Ahmed and John will be supported in the workshop facilitation by Lisa Reilly, until recently ED with GISF, Lisa is now expanding her counselling practice and working as a consultant to support physical and mental wellbeing.

The workshop will include:

  • Introduction to Cultural Intelligence
  • Advanced Communication Skills
  • Motivation, Influence and Persuasion
  • De-Escalation and Models for Decision Making

Participants will gain greater awareness and confidence to deal with a wide variety of people, as well as learning skills and techniques that have been tried and tested through many years of practical application in negotiation.

The workshop will look at motivation and influencing those in senior positions, your peers and those living and working in different cultures to your own. Ahmed and John will also provide models and tools that they use to support decision making.

The workshop is designed for any staff who have responsibility for staff safety and security and wish to improve their cultural intelligence for better negotiation and engagement.

Ultimately the workshop will aim to help you to understand yourself better in order to understand and influence others!
