Who are the Fitness Warriors?


The Sports Backers' Fitness Warriors program offers free training to area residents who have talent, passion, and potential to be fitness instructors for Richmond and tri-cities communities with the lowest rates of physical activity and the highest rates of chronic disease. 


As a Fitness Warrior Recruit you will:

  • Be committed to the schedule, committed to your fellow recruits and committed to your community. 
  • Be a part of community outreach and serve as a leader in your community.
  • Lead FREE classes for individuals of ALL fitness levels!
  • Be consistent and never quit, even when this journey gets tough!
We will hold mandatory training days for all Warrior Recruits on the following dates:
During phase 2 & 3 we will use the following Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as a rain date
  • January 9, 2021 Phase I Virtual Training (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • January 20, 2021 Phase I Virtual Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • February 6, 2021 Phase I Virtual Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • February 20, 2021 Phase I Virtual Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • March 6, 2021 Phase I Virtual Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • March 20, 2021 Phase II Outdoor Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • April 17, 2021 Phase II Outdoor Training (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • May 1, 2021 Teachbacks (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • May 15, 2021 Phase III (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • June 5, 2021 Phase III (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
  • June 26, 2021 Phase III Crystal Ceremony (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
This application will serve as a tool for us to begin to assess your talent, your potential and your passion to lead classes in the community. We will also asses your willingness to commit to the Fitness Warriors program and the community at large.

Program Highlights

As a Warrior Recruit, you will be required to actively participate in a number of learning opportunities that occur outside of your scheduled training days. Here is an outline of the Fitness Warriors Program. The program is broken down into 3 phases. Phase 1 will consist of virtual training while phase 2 and 3 will take place outdoors. Training days are all 4 hours, 9am-1pm unless otherwise noted below.  Although all opportunities are not mandatory, you will be asked to complete a certain amount of each listed to complete the program. Please read over the information carefully prior to proceeding.


Phase I Virtual Training: January 2021 - March 2021

  • Mandatory Training Opportunities: January 9*, January 23, February 6, February 20, March 6. (*January 9th training day will be from 8am-1pm.)
  • Warrior Fam Time: Crew Meetings, Attending Classes. This is time with your fellow Recruits while visiting Warrior classes, informal meet ups with your Warrior Mentor. 

  • Attending Fitness Warrior Classes: Classes are held weekly on zoom or outdoors, weather permitting. 
Phase II Outdoor Training: Late March 2021 - May 2021
  • Mandatory Training Opportunities: March 20, April 17, May 1 - We will use the Sunday following as our rain date from 1pm to 5pm. March 21, April 18 and May 2. 
  • Attend/ Lead Recruit Zoom Classes: These sessions will be scheduled with other recruits and Warriors for you to lead a portion of a class online. 
  • Attending Lead Trainer Sessions: These sessions provide a deep dive into training materials with Fitness Warriors Lead Trainer Ricky Martin. Days, times and locations will vary.

  • Attend Fitness Warrior Classes: Classes are held weekly on zoom or outdoors, weather permitting.
  • Participating in Community Events: Community events are where we spread the word about our free classes in the community. Days, times and locations will vary.
Phase III: Mid May 2021 - June 2021
  • Mandatory Training Opportunities: May 15, June 5, June 26* ; Rain dates: May 16, June 6, (*June 26- Crystal Ceremony/ Graduation 8am-2pm)
  • Lead your own weekly fitness class: Begins in mid-May 2021. This starts your one year commitment. Classes are led in free spaces provided by the community such as parks, Zoom, churches, community centers, housing complexes, and libraries. We refer to these as host sites.
  • Participating in Community Events: Community events are where we spread the word about our free classes in the community. Days, times and locations will vary.
