Summer can be a powerful time to share the joy and fun of reading with children and spark a love of language and learning. The Oakland Reads campaign wants to help you bring to life your ideas for promoting reading with children and families in your summer program.

Before starting your application, please carefully read the full Application Guidelines, which outline important eligibility and program requirements.

The deadline to apply for a 2019 Summer Reading Mini Grant is Monday, June 3 for new grantees and Friday, June 7 for returning grantees. New grantees may be asked to complete a quick phone call with OLC staff after your application is submitted to discuss your project. Funding decisions will be announced by Friday, June 14. Grants recipients must complete their project by the end of 2019 summer programming.

Nonprofit Partner For OUSD School Applicants
Grants cannot be made directly to OUSD school sites. In order to receive funds, OUSD schools and preschools/child development centers must partner with a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (such as a tutoring program, parent organization, or after school program) to accept and manage the grant. The nonprofit organization will be responsible for using grant funds to pay for event expenses.

Alternatively, we can use your grant funds to set your school up with a promo code that can be used to purchase books and supplies at First Book Marketplace. You may request that all or a portion of your grant be set up as a promo code. Please let us know if you would like to use this option and we will follow up with you to explain the process and get additional details.

Please contact team@oaklandliteracycoalition.org or (510) 280-3547 if you need assistance in identifying a nonprofit partner. We are happy to work with you to find a solution!

Applications will be prioritized that demonstrate how funds will be used to promote reading and connect children and families with resources. Applicants should consider the number of participants while developing the project budget. Successful grantees from prior years have used funds to bring in new, high-quality books, presenters/entertainers, and the unique professional resources to lead parent workshops or model reading strategies.

Applicants are invited to apply for a grant of $250 to $1,000. If your project budget is over this amount and you plan to use additional outside resources, please use the final question to describe the source of this other funding.
