Are you diverse student starting their first year of law school at an ABA or CA accredited law school? Law school is a major financial investment adding thousands to your debt. We want to support the brightest ChangeLawyers of tomorrow by eliminating the roadblocks that exist between you and success.


We believe that a state as diverse as California needs a justice system led by advocates of all backgrounds.

 

That's why we invest in bright, diverse scholars, every day, to ensure that they have the opportunity to become tomorrow's legal changemakers. Because righting historical wrongs in our courtrooms, classrooms, and beyond will allow us to truly deliver the original American value-Justice for all.

 

Recently admitted law students embarking on their first year of law school are invited to apply by Monday, June 24th, 2019, by 5pm PST.

 

The 1L Diversity Scholarship provides $7,500 scholarship to use towards expenses related to the first year of law school (including but not limited to: housing, living expenses, books, tuition, etc.)



*Diversity includes a broad array of backgrounds and life experiences, including students from groups or with skills or attributes that are underrepresented in the legal profession, and specifically including students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those that have overcome adversity.

Criteria, Instructions & Conditions

 

 

The 2019 Application Deadline is  Monday, June 24, 2019, by 5 pm PST.  Scholarship applicants will be notified of decisions in September 2019.  Recipients must use scholarship funding for their 1L year( 2019-2020 academic year).

Criteria

 

1. Applicant requirements: 


a. Accepted and committed to attend a JD program at an ABA or CA  accredited law school, at the time of submitting this 1L scholarship application.

i.   Students in LLM programs are not eligible to apply.

 

b. Starting their 1L year in the 2019-2020 academic year.


c. Demonstrate financial need.


d. Demonstrate commitment to social justice, public interest, and/or community         leadership. 


e. Submit one signed letter of recommendation.  Letters may be copies of letters submitted with Candidate’s law school applications. Letter should address Candidate’s social justice and/or community leadership involvement.


f. Candidate must intend to practice law in California after graduating from law school


g. Have maintained at least a 2.2 GPA or equivalent on a 4.0 scale

i.  If GPA is below a 2.2, must provide an explanation of extenuating circumstances.

 

Conditions


1. Important: ChangeLawyers reserves the right to use information from successful applicants as a part of its publicity of the 1L Diversity Scholarship and for general marketing effort. Please note this as you write your essay and provide other required information.


2. 1L Diversity Scholarship Recipients must:


a. Attend a reception in their honor, currently scheduled for Thursday, October 3, 2019 in San Francisco. ChangeLawyers will provide a stipend to defray travel costs for those attending school outside of the San Francisco area.  Failure to attend may result in a forfeiture of Recipient’s Diversity Scholarship, without notice.


b. Provide, in a timely fashion, contact information for dates between the Application Deadline and the date of the Scholarship Reception.  Failure to provide contact information may result in a forfeiture of Recipient’s Diversity Scholarship, without notice.


c. Allow the use of their personal statement, image, and other information provided for publicity and marketing purposes. Please note this as you provide personal stories and respond to demographic information.

i.  Provide a recent professional headshot of themselves upon receiving notification of their award. (instructions to follow)


d.   Diversity Scholarship Winners receiving named scholarships must be willing to contact funding organizations and may be invited and are expected, to the extent possible, to attend donor events.
