Oakland Reads is a campaign of the Oakland Literacy Coalition aimed at dramatically increasing third grade reading achievement among Oakland students. Hosting a Family Reading Celebration, funded by an Oakland Reads grant, is a great way for your organization to get involved in the campaign and share the fun and importance of reading with your families.

Before starting your application, please carefully read the full Application Guidelines, which outline important eligibility and program requirements.

The deadline to apply for a 2019-20 school year grant is Friday, October 4. Funding decisions will be announced by Friday, October 18. Grants recipients must use funds for a Family Reading Celebration during the 2019-20 school year.

Please contact team@oaklandliteracycoalition.org or (510) 280-3547 with questions and visit our website for more info, including a planning guide and resources to help you plan a fun and successful project.

Nonprofit Partner for OUSD School Applicants
Grants cannot be made directly to OUSD school sites. In order to receive funds, OUSD schools and preschools/child development centers must partner with a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (such as a tutoring program, parent organization, or after school program) to accept and manage the grant. The nonprofit organization will be responsible for using grant funds to pay for event expenses.

Alternatively, we can use your grant funds to set your school up with a promo code that can be used to purchase books and supplies at First Book Marketplace. You may request that all or a portion of your grant be set up as a promo code. Please email us at team@oaklandliteracycoalition.org if you would like to use this option and we will follow up with you to explain the process and get additional details.

Please contact team@oaklandliteracycoalition.org or (510) 280-3547 if you need assistance in identifying a nonprofit partner. We are happy to work with you to find a solution!
