Getting Involved

How would you like to volunteer with Oakland Promise?

Mentor Opportunities
Mentors provide advice, information, and encouragement to students as they progress through their educational journeys. Mentoring requires strong cultural awareness, a vocational or trade certification or a 2 or 4 year college degree, at least 1 year of professional/career experience and a multi-year commitment that ranges between 2-6 years. Mentors work with one or more Scholars through monthly coaching conversations and activities to offer academic, career and social and emotional support. We recruit Mentors annually through mandatory Mentor Information Sessions held monthly beginning in September  (only one session required).
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers share their time, talent, and/or expertise in a wide variety of one-time or ongoing volunteer projects. Opportunities include helping high school students apply to college, support in-office projects, event staffing and more.

• Admin/Office work ➡ Support us with the very important day-to-day tasks that keep our organization running! This includes calling campaigns to students, mentors, and other community members. It also involves data entry and event preparation, among other things. Ranges from in-office to remote opportunities. ______________________________________ • Event staffing ➡ Help us run our events! Provide support with essential tasks such as event set up, registration, and ushering. This is a great way to interact with our students, mentors, staff, as well as other volunteers!

• College applications ➡ Help high school seniors who are applying to our scholarship with their college applications (recent background in college access preferred). Our students apply to UCs, CSUs, and other private and public institutions. In this role, we ask that you provide feedback about students' personal statements and essays. This is a great way to meet some of our future students and help them take important steps towards completing their scholarship applications! ______________________________________ • Tutoring ➡ Tutor a student in an area of expertise such as Math, English, or Science.

• Career fairs ➡ Join us at tabling events where we share more information about our organization with the community. ______________________________________ • Informational interview ➡ Offer expert advice on your industry to students interested in pursuing a career within your field. ______________________________________ • Internship ➡ Share information about internships available at your company or connect us with other organizations that can offer professional development opportunities. ______________________________________ • Resume writing ➡ Help students apply for jobs and internships by reviewing and providing feedback on their resumes.
