Restraint Reduction Lead:
Date:
Priority 1:
To ensure leaders maintain proper oversight and promote a culture of restraint as a last resort. this will lead to a safe and trusting working environment for the staff and also a safe and secure living environment for our residents. In my experience, these two factors contribute massively to ensuring low levels of incidents and physical interventions.
Measure of Success:
Low levels of physical intervention in our homes is the overall aim. however, it is also important for leaders to ensure that if physical intervention is required to safeguard staff and/or service users then this is done in a safe, effective and humane way that respects dignity at all times. staff should not be afraid of having to hold to keep people safe.
Priority 2:
to ensure that all staff feel confident to de-escalate situations through various different methods before having to use physical intervention. it is also important for staff to be trained in effective methods of physical intervention as on occasions this is may be required to ensure people are kept safe. staff should be confident in the use of physical intervention with the emphasis always being on the last resort.
Measure of Success:
Staff who are confident and well trained will use very little physical intervention as they will have formed relationships and working practices that allow them to de-escalate situations without the need for the use of force. where force is required this will be for the shortest time possible and via the least restrictive methods.
Priority 3:
we pride ourselves on providing our service users with homes and not institutions. to this end we operate on inclusion and our practices reflect this. all of our residents are consulted in relation to the ways in which they would like to be managed should they begin to exhibit the need for greater support and reassurance and we have many ways of ensuring that we can do this with physical intervention being a last resort. should the need for this arise then following this there is a process of reflective learning for all but the focus is on the service user and how we can avoid having to do this again, or if we have to do this again, how we can do this in a better way that allows for them to calm and feel safe quicker. we always emphasis that we care too much for them to allow them to be out of control and to this end, sometimes we ,may need to keep them safe by holding. we constantly explore ways in which this can be reduced involving the service user at all levels.
Measure of Success:
low levels of physical intervention will mean that our approach and policy of inclusion is working. service users fundamentally need to feel safe and when they do so we begin to see a decrease in anxieties and in turn behaviours are not as challenging. we are very conscious that this is a home and as such individuals should feel as though it is home and not an institution. the longevity of our placements will also allow us to measure the success of this approach.
