Restraint Reduction Lead:
Date:
Priority 1:
For staff to receive ongoing service user specific training inc Positive Behaviour Support through PRICE refreshers (using the new RRN materials) and additional training (PBS and Trauma training to be researched and rolled out to staff) to enable us to reduce reliance on restrictive practices and make a real difference in the lives of people.
Measure of Success:
All of our service users have encountered trauma in their lives. Trauma training and a trauma-informed approach will provide an environment where a person who has experienced trauma feels safe and can develop trust. PBS training will help staff understand the reason for behaviour so can better meet people's needs, enhance their quality of life and reduce the likelihood that the behaviour will happen. The Restraint Reduction Network Training will help to protect people’s fundamental human rights and promote person centred best interest and therapeutic approaches to supporting people when they are distressed, Improve the quality of life of those being restrained and those supporting them, Increase understanding of the root causes of behaviour and recognition that many behaviours are the result of distress due to unmet needs and focus on the safest and most dignified use of restrictive interventions. All the training should enable us to reduce the reliance on restrictive practices by promoting positive culture and practice that focuses on prevention, de-escalation and reflective practice. The staff will also be suitably qualified and competent, with the necessary skills and experience to meet the needs of the individuals receiving support.
Priority 2:
To include more specific primary and secondary strategies in the PBSP’s and to set up a system for recording non-restrictive tertiary interventions as well as restrictive tertiary interventions, so that the organisation can learn more from patterns of non-restrictive interventions and then transfer the information onto the PBSP’s.
Measure of Success:
Specific strategies that focus on prevention resulting in a reduction in restrictive practices and an improvement in the quality of life of our service users.
Priority 3:
Data collected will be shared at all levels within the organisation so that everyone is aware of the organisation’s performance including comparisons to previous months. Each year an annual review will be circulated to families, staff, commissioners, regulators as appropriate.
Measure of Success:
The regular updates and the annual audit will be a systematic review of the effectiveness of the homes ability to support individuals behaviours and meet the needs of the individuals receiving support.
