Priority 1:
As part of workforce plan, staff must receive appropriate level of training in positive behaviour support As part of workforce plan, staff must receive appropriate level of training in a range of preventative measures focusing on conflict avoidance and resolution
Measure of Success:
Staff will have the key competencies and support the view that restraint is used as a last resort to manage risk behaviour associated with aggression, violence and acute behavioural disturbance.
Priority 2:
As a trust we need to take the experience of care from patients and demonstrate how that has impacted on change and improvement.
Measure of Success:
Staff will have the knowledge from patient experience and support the view that restraint is used as a last resort to manage risk behaviour associated with aggression, violence and acute behavioural disturbance. • reduce risks to individuals • encourage staff teams to consider their practice We will develop a catalogue of case studies, impact statements from patients, verbal feedback. Work alongside a network of peer support workers (there are other vol sector organisations that have similar networks) in their primary and secondary care services- working with them from a lived experience perspective. As subject matter experts -the feedback from these patients will hopefully enrich and enhance training programmes, and play a valuable role in supporting restraint reduction measures. The subject matter experts will be invited to feedback to exec boards and through patient forums.
Priority 3:
Trust to provide post-incident reviews and debriefs so that lessons are learned when incidents occur where restrictive interventions have had to be used. Post-incident reviews should be in a blame free context and would involve- • evaluate the physical and emotional impact on all individuals involved • identify if there is a need, and if so, provide counselling or support for any trauma that might have resulted
Measure of Success:
That the organisation provides good quality preventative support and staff have an increased understanding of the root causes of behaviour and recognition that many behaviours are the result of distress due to unmet needs
