Restraint Reduction Lead:
Date:
Priority 1:
We have recently interrogated 6 months’ of data to identify if any strategies used in the management of an event could be considered as any of the following restrictive practices. Physical intervention - physical force to prevent, restrict or subdue movement of a person’s body or part of their body which is not physical assistance or physical guidance PRN medication - used with the primary aim of reducing the level of arousal and managing the behaviour - this does not include pain relief medication Seclusion – leaving someone alone, away from others, in a place where they do not have the ability to leave the environment unaided, e.g. in a locked room. Environmental restraint - preventing a person moving freely by placing obstacles, barriers or locks in their way, e.g. a locked home, a wheelchair, bed rails, using a table or mattress to prevent movement. Psycho-social Restraint - strategies used for the purpose of power and control e.g. Ignoring, saying I’ll ring on call / the police, I’ll have to record it or I won’t speak to you until you’re calm.
Measure of Success:
This data will be used to inform a more detailed plan in relation to L&D & additional resource allocation. We also aim to increase confidence and competence of data analysis at local level. We will be able to measure success by having a written strategy and more PBS plans developed locally.
Priority 2:
Hearing the voices of those entrusted to our services, no matter how uncomfortable that might be, is undoubtedly the most valuable source of learning, we as an organisation can have. It helps to improve quality of life outcomes, develops knowledge and understanding of our support workers and is proactive approach in the advancement of new services.
Measure of Success:
Increased employment of people that use our services. Greater involvement from Experts by Experience in the process of new service development. Meeting with commissioners. Sharing personal experiences of the impact environments can have on everyday living with developers. Offering time limited mentorship to new people moving into a new home to help them navigate.
Priority 3:
Although we have a clear and effective system of post event support for all those involved, its important we continue to encourage a wider participation from people that live in services. We need to give greater focus to considering additional methods to engage people who do not communicate verbally or using the written word.
Measure of Success:
There is space on our electronic recording system to upload additional documents related to the event. We will see an increase in it's use when reports are reviewed and interrogated. We will be able to utilise these documents when reviewing PBS plans and evidence them in the process by their identification on the indirect assessment form.
