Kitchen of Purpose specializes in preparing low income individuals for meaningful careers as culinary entrepreneurs through access to our training in the Food Lab.

Applicants who have already established their businesses may join as members of our Shared Kitchen.

Food Lab Eligibility Criteria

To apply to Kitchen of Purpose's Food Lab, you must meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • Resident of DC, Maryland, or Virginia
  • Able to speak, write and comprehend English, Spanish, or both languages
  • Able to complete a State Criminal History Background Check from state(s) of residence for the last five years
  • Able to complete an income verification process through tax return (business or personal), paystubs, government benefits, etc. to determine your eligibility for discounted rates
  • Able to comply with the SBI Training Policies (including attendance, release of business status and results to track long term business outcomes, etc.)
  • Current business owner or an aspiring business owner with a strong desire to develop and launch a business in the foodservice industry
  • Copy of Valid ID

Application Checklist 

You will need to submit your Food Lab application and Small Business Readiness Assessment. In addition, you must upload, email, mail, or drop-off the applicable proof documents.
Shared Kitchen Eligibility Criteria

To apply to Kitchen of Purpose’s SBI Shared Kitchen, you must meet the following requirements:
Applicant Criteria:
  • 18 years or older
  • Self-employed business owner or partner
  • State Criminal History Background Check from your state(s) of residence for the last five years
Business Criteria and Ability to Provide the Following:
  • Food Liability Insurance with the "La Cocina VA DBA Kitchen of Purpose" Kitchen listed as additional insured
  • ServSafe or comparable Food Manager’s Certification for the contract holder
  • Food Business License(s) (Health Department Permit, Business License, etc.)
  • Compliance with the Shared Kitchen Policies
  • At least 3 months revenue or other source(s) of income (Revenue or income verification through bank/financial statements, paystubs, etc.)
  • Copy of Valid ID
