Introduction

Since 1995, Everybody Wins DC has helped children thrive by building connections through shared reading – and this school year will be no differentWe’re just moving from the classroom to the computer!

As always, EWDC programs are provided free of charge to DC-area students and families, thanks to the generous support of corporate partners and foundations.

While we can't guarantee enrollment in every program immediately, we are committed to prioritizing current EWDC families and those most impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Virtual Program Overview

Below is a quick overview of our 2020-21 programs. Please indicate your and your child's interest in any and all programs as you see fit!

Virtual StoryTimes and other special events are already planned for August and September. Weekly Power Readers programming will begin in mid-October.

While we can't guarantee enrollment in every program immediately, we are committed to prioritizing current EWDC families and those most impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
EWDC Virtual Programs

Most EWDC programs are designed for Kindergarten through 5th grade students. During the 2020-21 program year, several Pre-K and middle school options will be offered to current EWDC families and families from partner organizations.

Please review brief EWDC program descriptions below.
Power Readers: An Expanded Power Lunch
K - 5th Grade and Returning Middle Schoolers

Power Lunch is going virtual this year! To accommodate distance learning schedules, we are offering slots throughout the day, including before school, afterschool, and evening options. It's not just lunch anymore!

Power Lunch, EWDC's signature shared reading program, matches one student with 1-2 mentors to meet once each week throughout the school year. No lesson plans, no curriculum - just building a connection over books. Many students have the same mentor throughout elementary school - and beyond!

StoryTime: Group Read-Alouds and Activities
Primarily K - 5th Grade; Some PK and Middle School Options

StoryTime brings together small groups of students to participate in a read-aloud experience with special guests, often centered on themes such as goal setting, perseverance, community service, and career exploration. After the read-aloud, StoryTime volunteers and students participate in a Q&A or a fun, themed activity.

This year, StoryTime events will be virtual, with guest readers, volunteers, and students interacting live over an online platform. StoryTime will be offered at least once per month.

The Book Project: New Books to Build Your Home Library
Primarily K - 5th Grade; Some PK and Middle School Options

The Book Project distributes new, free books to children so they can build their personal libraries and enjoy shared reading experiences at home. While students used to select their Book Project titles during the school day, EWDC haadjusted its distribution model to deliver books directly to families’ doorsteps and at socially-distant community events as appropriate.

Student Book Clubs: Small-Group, Regular Meetings to Discuss Choice Books
Primarily K - 5th Grade; Some PK and Middle School Options

Student Book Clubs will allow small groups to meet regularly and discuss great books with EWDC staff and volunteers. As they explore stories for fun, children will also benefit from much-needed social interaction with peers and mentors!

Family Workshops: Connecting Adults to Learn Together
Primarily K - 5th Grade; Some PK and Middle School Options

EWDC’s Family Workshops will connect parents and guardians with EWDC partners to provide learning opportunities on topics ranging from literacy, child development, financial planning, college and career awareness, and more!

Student Learning Community: Small-Group Learning
Primarily K - 5th Grade; Some PK and Middle School Options

Online Student Learning Communities will offer one-time or extended opportunities for students to explore interesting shared reading experiences! Possible programs may include “Learn from the Expert” sessions where students explore a topic of interest with the guidance of an expert in the field. Other options may connect groups of students who seek a deeper dive into a story or theme of their choice.
Here, you'll share information about the student(s) you'd like to participate in EWDC programs during the 2020-21 school year. This form will allow you to register up to three students. Additional enrollments will be handled by EWDC staff.

Considerations

We'd like to briefly explore any logistical constraints or considerations you may have!
Technology

Virtual Platform
Most EWDC virtual programming will be offered via the Zoom online platform. Audio can be accessed through the Zoom platform or a dial-in phone line, so those without access to a webcam can still call in!

Scheduling

We are hosting Power Readers sessions on a wide range of days/times to accommodate the variable schedules associated with students' distance learning and adults' working hours. All sessions will last approximately 45 minutes.

As much as possible, we hope to reflect the scheduling needs of our EWDC families and volunteers! We will do our best to schedule all pairs during one of your top choices.
