Applications to the ScottishPower Foundation Marine Biodiversity Fund are now closed.

Purpose of the fund

The next decade of climate action will be crucial to the health of our seas and oceans. The ScottishPower Foundation Marine Biodiversity Fund will finance one multi-year project that contributes to the global objectives of protecting our seas and enhancing marine biodiversity, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.

It is anticipated that the successful project will receive funding for a period of up to three years at a rate of £200K per annum.

Project focus

To contribute to the protection and enhancement of the marine/coastal environment, preventing negative impacts and/or enabling the repair and renewal or the marine/coastal environment, including the safeguarding of marine species.

The project should incorporate an element of educational outreach to share project knowledge and raise awareness of threats to the marine environment by engaging with the local community and/or wider society.

Your organisation

All of the following statements must apply to your organisation:

- You have a demonstrable track record of delivering projects in the marine conservation environment

- You have an active board of at least three unrelated trustees

- You have been registered with one of the UK Charity Regulators for at least three full years

- You have at least three full years of published accounts that show as received on the relevant charity regulator website

- Your income in the last set of published accounts was greater than £800K

- The bank account into which the funding is to be made is not based in a restricted country (i.e. tax haven, high corruption risk or sanctioned country)

Partnerships

We consider a partner to be an organisation involved in planning, execution and monitoring of the proposed project.

For projects delivered in partnership, we may request supporting documents from all partners should you be shortlisted.

- All partner organisations must be based in the UK

- The lead organisation, considered to be the organisation submitting the request for funding, must be a charity registered with one of the UK Charity Regulators

- For partnerships with registered companies, there must demonstrable evidence of in-kind or financial contributions from the partner company

- Requests for funding are limited to one per partnership

Work we don’t fund

We provide funding that is restricted to the delivery of specific projects, and not for general unrestricted running costs. There are certain types of activity that we are unable to fund. Your application must not request funding for any of the following:

- Unrestricted costs

- Funding that will be passed on to individuals or other organisations

- Short term interventions including conferences, galas, holidays and expeditions

- Sponsorship or funding towards an appeal

- Projects that takes place outside the United Kingdom and its territorial waters (within 12 nautical miles)

- Medical care or medical research

- The promotion of religious or political beliefs
- Projects which are primarily based around sports activities

Due diligence

We will not accept an application from you if your organisation, any key partner organisation or related director/trustee/managers has ever been:

- Sanctioned or sentenced for fraud, bribery, corruption or other illegal activity

- Disqualified from Public office or as a Company Director

- Disqualified from contracting with the Public sector in the last 5 years

- … or is currently under investigation for any of the above

Funding

- Funding for the first and second years of the project will be awarded in increments of £200,000 per annum. In the event that the recipient has not complied with the requirements of the funding agreement and achieved the project deliverables and milestones set out in the Funding Agreement, the contract may be terminated by the Foundation after the first year with no second payment. If the project is progressing well, the Foundation may at its discretion decide to extend the contract into a third year and pay further funding.

Repeat Funding

- The lead organisation, considered to be the organisation submitting the request for funding, will enter into a funding agreement with the ScottishPower Foundation for a period of up to three years with no possibility of funding for the same project beyond the three-year period.

Salary Costs

We encourage our applicants to pay their staff the Real Living Wage, and require that any post directly funded from our grant is paid at no less than the current voluntary hourly rate of pay recommended by the Living Wage Foundation.

Full Cost Recovery

Your budget breakdown should factor in the associated indirect overheads as well as direct costs associated with the delivery of services.

If your organisation works with children and/or vulnerable adults, you must have a written policy on Safeguarding that has been reviewed by your Board of Trustees within the last two years. When submitting your application, you must upload the following evidence:

- Your written policy on Safeguarding (please note that we are examining your policy in our capacity as a funder only and not in any advisory capacity. Our review of your policy should not be relied on as an endorsement of it).

- A letter from your CEO or the Chair of your Board of Trustees confirming that your Safeguarding policy has been reviewed by your Board of Trustees within the last two years.

Permits and licenses

If your project requires any type of permit or license for example, Marine Wildlife License, MS-LOT license, you must be able to evidence that you are in possession of the relevant permits or licenses, or otherwise demonstrate, in detail, how you plan to acquire them and associated timescales. You must upload evidence of this when submitting your application.
