United Way Association of South Carolina:

United Way Association of South Carolina (UWASC) works to maximize the capacity and effectiveness of local United Ways and provide leadership on issues that impact the quality of life of South Carolina residents. Through a network of collective partnerships, UWASC is committed in its efforts to:

  • Provide support and enhance capacity of local United Ways
  • Coordinate and champion action on significant public policy issues; and
  • Improve effectiveness and coordination of health and human services in South Carolina; specifically through the administration of the South Carolina Service Commission

United Way fights for the Health, Education and Financial Stability of every person in our community. We go beyond temporary fixes to create lasting change in communities around the world. By bringing people and organizations together around innovative solutions, we impact millions of lives every year.

This video is a bit outdated, however, it does a great job of capturing the bottom-up approach of Local United Way's. Each organization is locally managed and governed by members of their own local community. The United Way Association exists to support their needs.
AmeriCorps SC (SC Service Commission)

Most federal departments have a state-based counterpart in the US governing system. Following that structure, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) administers National Service at the federal level and works in partnership with the South Carolina Service Commission to develop service programs addressing key challenges. The United Way Association of South Carolina was named the Administration Entity for the Commission in 2007 and has been housed within the organization ever since.

UWASC and the Commission share the aligned goal to leverage volunteerism to improve the quality of life for all within the state. Both positions will have contact with our fellow UWASC team, but will be specifically focused on the SC Service Commission. The Commission administers AmeriCorps programming, supports volunteerism, and responds during disasters.

AmeriCorps programs help communities address locally-defined challenges by mobilizing America’s greatest asset, it's citizens. AmeriCorps Members across the state engage civic leaders committed to utilizing their skills, experience, and passion to address needs in the following focus areas: Disaster Services, Education, Economic Opportunity, Environmental Stewardship, Healthy Futures, and Veterans and Military Families.
