How did you learn about Rocking the Boat?
We have occasional volunteer opportunities for people who want to help make a difference in the lives of young people in the South Bronx. Please let us know what you are most interested in and someone will contact you.
Tutoring: Tutors commit to working one hour a week with a participant in Rocking the Boat’s afterschool program to provide academic and post-high school support. All tutors are asked to set up a brief phone interview and are then invited to attend a volunteer orientation before being matched with an individual participant. Tutoring happens during Rocking the Boat’s scheduled programming, which runs from 4:30 – 7:30 Mondays – Thursdays.
Operations: Rocking the Boat’s facilities and equipment always need to be kept in tiptop shape. Program staff appreciate boatbuilders or carpenters who can help with minor repairs on the wooden fleet or other small building projects. Sailors who can help with sailboat maintenance and small repairs are welcome, especially in the late winter and early spring as boats are readied for a new season, as well as people who can help repair and maintain various pieces of equipment: nets, waders, oars, pfds, and more. Please get in touch if you are handy and able to paint a wall, fix a door handle, or jump in on odd jobs.
Development: The Development team gladly welcomes support on a range of special projects throughout the year: database clean up, appeal and invitation mailings, development of marketing materials, public relations, and support at two major fundraising events—Rocking the Boathouse and Rocking Manhattan. Prospect research on foundations, corporate sponsors, public agencies, and individuals is an ongoing activity where volunteers could also contribute time and energy.
