Welcome

We are a charity who are passionate about building a world where no child or young person becomes involved in violence. Our small part in this is to find what works and build a movement to put this knowledge into practice. Everything we do is intended to help us fulfil this duty. This includes the way we use our funding. In the later years of our life we will use our funding to scale things up, to spread great practice and to look to change the system. In the earlier years we will use our funding to build a consensus – from the grass-roots to the government – on what works best to support young people. Even though grassroots organisations feel frustrated that they ‘know’ what works, there is not a consensus on what works. We believe that our most vulnerable young people deserve the very best research on what works and for everyone to get behind what will best make a difference.

This country has spent many millions using high quality evaluation to understand which vaccines can keep us safe from Covid. We believe that our young people deserve the same rigour of evaluation. In these first few years, we will use most of our funding to fund the same sort of trials and evaluations. This means we will look to fund great work over a number of years and fund a separate organisation to evaluate it properly (not just for a pretty report).

Keeping young people safe from violence cuts across lots of different areas from youthwork to schooling, policing to parenting, social work to healthcare. Because of this we will target each Grant Rounds on meeting different needs that children have. This ensures that we can build a deep knowledge about what works for each need. One round might be focused on giving young people 'A Fair Society', another on providing 'A Safe, Positive Place to Learn'.

This round is focused on Diverting Young People from the Criminal Justice System. We are looking for applications that help us answer this question:

"What approaches are most effective at diverting 10 to 17-year-old children from the criminal justice system at turning point moments before court action is taken, ensuring they do not become involved in crime or violence in the future?"

Please do apply for this round if you have a proposal that fits with this. Thank you for everything you do for young people.

What to do

We are delighted that you are planning to apply for funding from us at the Youth Endowment Fund. To apply, you will need to complete this form.

Please tell us as honestly as you can about what you propose to do. We are looking for your proposal if:

  • If successfully delivered, it would successfully divert 10-17 year old children from the criminal justice system (not proposals focused on a different end outcome)
  • It aims to reach children who are most at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system (not all children)
  • It is delivered by an organisation who is likely to be able to reach these young people and successfully deliver what they propose (not just write well about it)
  • Is possible to be rigorously evaluated by another organisation to see if it works (not just unnecessary burden on you producing reports you don’t believe in)
If this is you, please do apply.

The form is broken into 2 parts; 12 Yes / No eligibility questions to see if you are suitable to apply for the funding & then the main application which will ask for detailed responses in regard to your request for funds.
Before applying, you may want to review the list of questions here [FULL LIST OF QUESTIONS] to see what information that you need. The questions have been overseen by someone who has worked in the youth sector for some time. We know that there are quite a few questions, but we believe that they are all questions that you would need to consider to make sure you are best helping the young people you are passionate about.

You can save your form at any time and return to it later.

Please do not use the Back or Forward button of your browser as this will result in any answer previously entered being lost. Use the in page navigation buttons.

Once we have received all the proposals we will read and assess every single one. If we do not fund your proposal, it does not mean that we think you are doing a bad job at all. We are trying to find the very best proposals where we can conduct the very best evaluations to build a consensus on what works. Please refer to the guidance document for more information about when you can expect to hear from us and what the next steps will be.

We need the information in this form in order to consider your application for funding. Our applicant privacy notice has more information about how we use your personal data.

Thank you for all your do to keep young people safe.

Yours,

Jon Yates

Executive Director, YEF
