ConnectED - Chicago, IL
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with JTB for ConnectED. This summer virtual program introduces high school students to the legal field with attorney panels, presentations on different practice areas of law, discussions on the role of law in current movements, and inspires students through the stories of judges and their rise to the role. Our volunteers are essential in making our programs successful. Whether volunteering for a live or recorded session, expect to become a mentor to one or two JTB scholars!

Volunteer Opportunities
  • Rise Up: To prepare students to curate their own social justice awareness projects, students will participate in live Zoom sessions throughout the week to learn the legal context of current-day social justice movements. This speaker should be able to present on cases that have helped to propel or inhibit movements (i.e. Loving v. Virginia for the Civil Rights Movement.) Presenters should be able to provoke critical thinking skills, provide a safe space for students to share their thoughts, and guide the conversation in a way that motivates students. Volunteers would present their session twice for two different sets of students. Volunteers can choose to present on one of the following topics or can propose a movement to JTB when preparing for the session.
    1. Me Too or Times Up
    2. Black Lives Matter
    3. LGBTQ Equality Movement
    4. Gun Violence
    5. Climate Justice
    6. Voting Rights
    7. Income Gap
  • Judge Spotlight: This pre-recorded Zoom session features a conversation with a judge that highlights their life and career. Students look to the judges as role models and want to know more about their early life, the people who inspired them, the steps they took to become a judge, and what it's like to be a judge. We are in need of judges and interviewers (typically a clerk or attorney who knows them well). The pair would join a Zoom call, record the session, and submit the video to JTB for editing by June 25, 2021.
  • Topics in Law: Students wants to know more about the several different practice areas of law. We're looking for law professors or specialized attorneys to provide more information on a topic in law and present on important cases within that field. The pre-recorded presentation should be about 45 minutes long and submitted to JTB by June 25, 2021. The presenter can cover one of the following topics or can propose a topic to JTB.
    1. Criminal Law
    2. Juvenile Law
    3. Tort Law
    4. Family Law
    5. Environmental Law
    6. Civil Rights Law
    7. Entertainment Law
    8. Corporate Law
  • Law School Admissions Process: High school students are looking to know more about what administrators look for when admitting students into law school and how they can prepare early for the process. This is would be a pre-recorded 30-minute session and would be submitted to JTB by June 25, 2021.
  • Business Etiquette: This lesson would help students learn about appropriate business  etiquette and prepare them for networking and contacting potential mentors. This will be a 30-minute pre-recorded lesson and could touch on some of the following topics:
    1. Business attire
    2. Email etiquette for reaching out to potential mentors or interview follow-up messages. Including how to construct an appropriate email.
    3. Resume building

JTB will follow up with you for further details once you have signed up. If you have any questions, please contact Cristina Figueroa at cfigueroa@jtb.org.
