On Thursday, September 16, GatherDC is hosting alternative Yom Kippur experiences in non-traditional spaces to make it easy for Jewish 20s/30s to observe this holiday in an authentic and meaningful way. Please choose from the Alternative Yom Kippur opportunities below that you would like to participate in.

Each of these experiences are open to Jewish and Jew-curious young adults of all gender identities, sexual orientations, levels of religiosity, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities.

The Experiences
Morning Yom Kippur Experience: 10am - 12pm This is not a traditional service. It’s not in a synagogue. It’s non-denominational. There is no fasting required, and you don’t have to believe in God. There will be words of Jewish wisdom to discuss with peers, prompts for introspection, communal storytelling, creative ritual, live acoustic music and compassionate goal-setting for the new year. Location: Hook Hall in Columbia Heights (this event will be outdoors; see our COVID safety plan below). The deadline to register is September 13. Cost? Choose what you pay.

AT CAPACITY- Break the Fast: 7-9pm

A delicious outdoor break the fast outside GatherDC's townhouse. We will provide bagels, schmear and drinks. Location: Our townhouse in Dupont Circle, at 1817 M Street NW. Cost? Free with suggested donation. Space is limited.

Requirements for Participation

  • Advance registration is required for all GatherDC experiences. There will be no walk-ups.

  • Participants must notify a GatherDC team member in advance if they are experiencing or have experienced symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 14 days.

  • Participants must notify a GatherDC team member in advance if they have been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 14 days. 

  • Participants must knowingly assume the risk of possible exposure to the coronavirus (or other public health risk) by attending an in-person experience, and release GatherDC, its board, and its employees from any and all liabilities.

  • Due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic things may be change. We hope to give you as advanced notice as possible but GatherDC prioritizes the health and safety of our community.

In-Person Gathering Health and Safety Protocols

  • The Alternative Yom Kippur morning experience will be held outside. 

  • Masks will not be required outdoors, but we do ask you to wear one when signing in and going inside to use the restroom.

  • Hand sanitizer will be readily available, and requested upon entry.

  • In case of inclement weather, we will move to Hook Hall’s 7500 sq ft indoor space. In this case, masks will be required and social distancing will be followed. Windows and doors will be open for maximum air flow. We will be in touch with any change of plans as soon as we can so you can decide what feels right for you.

  • The Alternative Yom Kippur Break the Fast will be held outdoors, in front of the GatherDC townhouse. We will provide individually-packaged food and drinks for you to enjoy with your friends outside or back at home in your pj’s.
