Activity (A): Guided tour of Moakley Courthouse

Students will explore the workings of the courthouse as well as the themes and ideals of justice and democracy through viewing, analyzing, and discussing key features of the courthouse on a tour, including a “jury and justice” activity in a real courtroom. (45 minutes)

Activity (B): Visit with a judge

Students will explore issues of justice in a courtroom and hear about a judge’s career path, role in our justice system, and experiences in the legal profession. (20 minutes)

Activity (C): Observe U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts or U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit proceedings OR participate in an interactive Courtroom Activity

Students in grades 8-12 will sit in on a live trial or appeals court oral arguments and take part in a discussion afterwards with a Discovering Justice staff and their teacher about what they observed in court. (45-60  minutes)

Students Grades K-2 & 6-8 will participate in an interactive discussion and Courtroom Activity about a real trial, and answer the question "What is Justice?" (60 minutes)

The standard cost for a field trip to the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse is $8 per student. For schools with 30% or greater economically disadvantaged students, fees for the Field Trip will be waived. See if your school qualifies here (select your school, click the "Students" tab, then click "Selected Populations" from the list on the left side of the page.)

Please request field trip dates one month in advance. Please note that visits with judges and jury trials are not guaranteed because Discovering Justice does not control the court schedule.
You will receive a follow-up email from Kiara Batista (kbatista@discoveringjustice.org), the Courthouse Programs Associate at Discovering Justice.

Note: Please submit a separate request form to book more than one field trip or to book a trip for a separate class. In addition, Discovering Justice does not provide transportation to the Moakley courthouse.
