Submissions are now limited to Canadian productions of any length and premiere status, and for international feature length films (66+ min) that are submitting as a world premiere (ie. has not screened anywhere in the world).


If you have a non-world premiere that meets our Canadian eligibility guidelines or an international short (40 min or less), please contact submissions@hotdocs.ca for info about submitting.

General

Hot Docs uses the English title in ALL Festival publications, including the program book and schedule. Exceptions will be made for titles with names, proper nouns, or other untranslatable words.

Duration of film in minutes. Do not use decimals or any other characters. Round up to the nearest minute


Closed Captioning appears on the bottom of the screen to provide a written description of the audio elements in the film as they happen (ie. dialogue, music, background noise, etc.) It is not the same as subtitles.

Premiere Status

Hot Docs requires all feature and mid-length submissions to be at minimum an Ontario premiere and short films to be at minimum a Toronto Premiere. If your short film is available publicly online, please select Toronto Premiere. Please indicate the premiere status this submission would receive if selected for Hot Docs 2022. Doc Shop

The Doc Shop is a market platform created by Hot Docs to increase your film’s discoverability.

 

If you are seeking international sales, broadcast acquisitions, or festival solicitations, it is a means to make your film available to accredited Hot Docs delegates, including broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, and festival programmers.

 

The Doc Shop is password and DRM-protected, allowing delegates to securely browse, search, and screen films, and to contact the associated rights-holders.

 

All films selected for Hot Docs 2022 will be eligible for inclusion in the Doc Shop free of charge. Films not selected for the 2022 Festival may still be eligible for inclusion, subject to a placement fee. For more information about the Doc Shop, contact docshop@hotdocs.ca.
