Hunger Awareness Month September 2021 #HungerFreeSD Presented by Hunger Advocacy Network
Community Organization Pledge

As a community organization in San Diego County, we understand the effects that even short-term hunger can have on people’s health and well-being. By taking this pledge, we acknowledge that there are solutions available, and we commit to taking actionable steps towards improving nutrition security and ensuring that every San Diegan has the opportunity to lead a healthy and active life.

To create a Hunger Free San Diego, we pledge to:

·     Ensure that our organization understands nutrition insecurity and its impact on the people that we serve. We will support the use of available data from Hunger Free San Diego and create space to engage and listen to people who have experienced hunger to inform strategic solutions to hunger.

·     Learn about available food assistance resources and how we can best connect San Diego residents facing nutrition insecurity to food by encouraging our staff to participate in a Hunger Free Navigator training.

·     Share food assistance resources including the Hunger Free San Diego Food Assistance Resource Flyer with our clients; examples include: creating a landing page on our website for individuals to easily find food assistance resources, sharing resources in our newsletters and through our social media platforms.

·     Work to advance data-driven solutions to ending hunger; examples include partnering with other hunger relief/nutrition security organizations, integrating food assistance resources into people's everyday environments, and supporting public policies that improve equitable access to food for all individuals.

About Hunger Free San Diego: Hunger Free San Diego is a collaboration of agencies and community residents leading the fight against hunger in our region, that is facilitated by San Diego Hunger Coalition. This initiative is guided by an Advisory Board, comprised of more than 30 experts representing emergency food providers, social service agencies, government agencies, healthcare providers, school districts, early education providers, researchers, funders, and other aligned collaboratives; and a Community Advisory Council, comprised of community resident leaders with lived experience accessing and connecting people to food assistance resources. The Hunger Free San Diego initiative provides in-depth look at the landscape of hunger and hunger relief services in San Diego County, highlighting collective impact as well as unmet need and opportunities to further invest and scale promising solutions. It will take all of us to end hunger in our region, and Hunger Free San Diego is setting the table for a data-driven, collaborative, and solution-oriented approach.
