Despite the growing diversity of voices in the book world, it can still be hard to see yourself in the pages of a book. But Daphne Palasi Andreades’ debut novel, Brown Girls, lets us know that we can find love letters to the people and places that have made us. Come explore the beauty of creating the stories YOU want to read in The Intimate & the Invented: Fiction Writing with Daphne Palasi Andreades. Queens native and O. Henry Prize recipient, Daphne Palasi Andreades, will discuss her debut novel, Brown Girls, drawing from what we intimately know—our lived experiences, hometown and family—while combining this with our imagination to fill in the blanks. A creative combination that will make your fictional world and characters jump off the page, Daphne Palasi Andreades will also speak about her writing process and publication journey behind her debut novel, Brown Girls. Daphne Palasi Andreades was born and raised in Queens, New York. She holds an MFA from Columbia University, where she was awarded a Henfield Prize and a Creative Writing Teaching Fellowship. She is the recipient of a Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference scholarship, among other honors. Brown Girls is her first novel. At Friday Night Salons, a special guest artist shares their personal and professional journey and guides us through a series of inspirational writing prompts.
