Event Description
This event is open to all mentors, peer-to-peer mentees, and Girls Write Now Staff. You have most likely heard the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Sayings like this reinforce the belief that microaggressions can not hurt someone. Though they may seem subtle, small, or less noticeable, and are often unintentional, microaggressions are harmful verbal or non-verbal behaviors based on factors such as race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, or other aspects of identity that convey negative or discriminatory messages towards marginalized groups. As mentors, understanding and addressing microaggressions is crucial for creating inclusive and supportive environments. This Mentor Professional Development session will engage mentors with a reflective process and give practice with intervening when either witnessing microaggressions or perpetuating them. Facilitator, Olivia Jayakar, will guide us through understanding what microaggressions are and the importance of addressing them. We will engage in self-reflective activities to identify our own participation in microaggressions. By understanding what microaggressions look like, and learning tools ahead of time, we can be better prepared for when we next notice one happening, and equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the challenge effectively. Join us for this illuminating session that aims to empower mentors to navigate microaggressions, fostering a mentorship landscape that is supportive, inclusive, and enriching for both mentors and mentees alike. You will receive a Zoom confirmation email within five minutes of submitting your registration. See you soon!
