The vision of Washington Conservation Voters (WCV) is that through equitable structures and systems created by statewide, collaborative efforts, everyone in Washington lives in a healthy and just environment, community, and economy. Our mission is to advocate for environmental progress and justice through actions that mobilize the public, elect champions for the environment, and hold our leaders accountable.

To achieve our vision and mission, WCV is committed to dismantling systemic racism and advancing racial equity and environmental justice in all that we do. We work with the understanding that the same beliefs, practices, and systems that create and perpetuate interpersonal and institutional racism, are also those that create and perpetuate environmental destruction. Solving one cannot be done without solving the other. There is no environmental justice without racial justice and economic justice.

About this questionnaire: We thank you for taking time out of your busy campaign schedule to complete this questionnaire. Your responses will be an important factor in our endorsement consideration. No one answer will guarantee an endorsement; instead, all answers will be weighed into our decision making process and all candidates will be considered. Our process includes this questionnaire, a potential interview, and background research on your candidacy, as well as outreach and collaboration with community partners.

Endorsement Directions: Please read the directions below carefully:

1. Complete the questionnaire. For long form questions, please try to keep your responses to 200 words at a maximum. The deadline to submit the questionnaire for consideration by filing week is May 1. The formal deadline is May 12, 2022,

but we recognize that folks sometimes declare later. If you think your application should get consideration after this deadline, please contact WCV’s Political Director, Joy Stanford prior to submitting a questionnaire (joy@wcvoters.org).

2. Please complete the questionnaire in its entirety. If you are unsure about a question, please feel welcome to consult others in your local community or contact the WCV team directly.

3. In addition to submitting the questionnaire, you will be asked to upload a copy of your resume. Once you submit all the required items, we’ll review your submission. We may follow up to ask for your availability for a video interview. Please note that submitting your availability does not mean you are guaranteed an interview or that specific slot; it is to help our team plan logistics.

4. As our endorsement process proceeds, a member of our staff will contact you to inform you of any next steps.

Issues/Policy

We continue to degrade and destroy our state's habitats and ecosystems, losing more than 20,000 acres of forest lands across the state each year. Meanwhile, the climate crisis continues to threaten families across the state with more frequent flooding, drought conditions, deadlier wildfires, and pollution that harms our health and well being. No matter your identity, we all face the impacts of this crisis together.

The decisions we make over the next few years will set the future course for our state, and there is no time to waste. We need elected leaders who are committed to the bold actions that are needed to build a sustainable future for the next generation of Washingtonians.

Political campaigns are an opportunity to engage people in our democratic system. How would you engage voters and community members, particularly those historically excluded, in your campaign in a way that fosters long-term engagement in our democracy?

Anti-Black racism has played a foundational role in constructing a system of racial superiority and has direct impacts on environmental health. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country are liberated, the benefits will be wide reaching and transformative for society as a whole. #BlackLivesMatter tells everyone that Black lives are important to your liberation. What actions will you take in your campaign and as an elected official to support Black lives?

Supporting Tribal Treaty Rights can mean taking hard stances to protect habitat and salmon populations that have sustained people for millennia. How will you use your position as an elected official to support and prioritize Tribal Treaty Rights?

No Fossil Fuel Pledge

There is a growing grassroots and youth movement asking candidates to sign the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, which reads: "I pledge not to take contributions over $200 from oil, gas, and coal industry executives, lobbyists, and PACs and instead prioritize the health of our families, climate, and democracy over fossil fuel industry profits."

Our national partners created Nofossilfuelmoney.org in 2017, and since that time more than 2,000 politicians from 49 states have committed to reject campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry.

Evergreen Future Campaign

Washington Conservation Voters launched the Evergreen Future Campaign in 2020, which includes a four-year policy platform for action on climate, protecting clean water and healthy forests, holding corporate polluters accountable, and addressing environmental justice and health disparities around the state.

Voters overwhelmingly support the Evergreen Future platform. That is why we are asking candidates and elected officials to commit to taking the actions needed to advance the platform in Washington state.
