Position: ChangeMaker Application Form (Director, Lead, and Volunteer)  

Overview

MakerGirl is seeking active-university students (high-schoolers who have been ChangeMakers before) leaders who want to work on the biggest education challenges today so that tomorrow there is growth built from a foundation of girls who love learning & tinkering.

Due to MakerGirl’s explosive growth recently with virtual learning, the critical need for STEM education and the desire for every girl to be a MakerGirl, we are seeking ChangeMakers (university/college students, or high-schoolers who have worked with MakerGirl before) to join the MakerGirl Academy student-run team.
Who are we looking for?

  • College/University Students (actively enrolled students)
  • High School Students (near one of our Academies or been a ChangeMaker before)
Current Academy Locations:
  • MakerGirl Academy in Champaign, IL or other in the US
  • MakerGirl Academy in Chicago, IL  
  • MakerGirl Illinois Wesleyan Academy (IWU) based in Bloomington, IL 
  • If you are from other cities/states with previous MakerGirl/3D printing experience please still reach out to general@makergirl.us. 
  • If you want to start an Academy at your college, you need two active students (Freshmen -Juniors) with a University Coordinator (admin or professor) to support your Academy. Reach out to general@makergirl.us for a one-pager about starting a MakerGirl Academy

Our ChangeMakers are people who want to do more than just add another line to their resume. ChangeMakers are go-getters and self-starters who want to make an impact in the lives of younger MakerGirls and contribute their time and talent to our organization as a whole. 

We provide many outlets for professional development, networking, skill-building, and growth opportunities within MakerGirl. In return, we do require a minimum time commitment from our volunteers. An outstanding ChangeMaker will go above & beyond what is listed here, taking on different projects and leading additional programs.

Minimum Semester hourly time commitment as a ChangeMaker Volunteer (not paid):

  • Sessions live and virtual (2 per month, 2 hours each): 12

  • All Team Meetings / Professional Development events (1 per month, 1 hour each): 3

  • Ad hoc projects (i.e. Academy meetings, fundraising events): 4

  • Total hours per semester: 15-20hours

  • Avg. hours per month: 5 hours

  • Minimum Semester hourly time commitment as a Lead:

  • *Weekly Thursday 5-5:30 CT Lead meeting

  • Sessions live and virtual (2 per month, 2 hours each): 12. All ChangeMakers must attend at least 1 live session (or an ad hoc project).
  • STL File Review (1 per session, ~30 min avg.): 4
  • In-person 3D printing coordination of the girls 3D designs and MakerGirl packing/ shipping/ mailing (1 per session, ~30 min avg.): 4
  • All Team Meetings / Professional Development events (1 per month, 1 hour each): 5
  • Ad hoc projects (i.e. Academy meetings, fundraising events): 4
  • Total hours per semester: 20-40hours
  • Avg. hours per month: 20-30 hours
  • *Avg. Hours per week 5 hours
Roles
MakerGirl Director: Responsible for all programming and running of the Academies
Manage the Leads, Academies, and volunteers with running all sessions and ad hoc project support may be required. (1-2 open positions. Juniors or Seniors in college). Goal: Run the entire session schedule and ChangeMaker program to run the MakerGirl sessions
MakerGirl Leads: responsible for all programming and running of the Academies and supporting the MakerGirl Director (student) to learn and run everything. Must be interested in becoming the MakerGirl Director in the future. Support the Director and manage the volunteers with running all sessions and ad hoc project support may be required. Coordinate with Academy sponsors.
(2-3 open positions are each Academy. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in college. This is a college position only. As of Spring 2024, this role may be paid if you are a "Lead - Programs." if you are a Lead this is unpaid. As a Lead we would want you to apply for the Director role next year!)

MakerGirl Volunteer: Running virtual and live sessions, ensuring all 3D designs are ready to print, printing 3D designs, and packaging/shipping all prints. Support the Director and Leads with running all sessions and ad hoc project support may be required.
(4-10 open positions are each Academy. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in college. For schoolers you must have been a ChangeMaker before. Unpaid)

Which Role are you applying for?


Preferred Experience

  • 3D printing experience or deep interest in 3D printing!

  • Experience working with kids and how best to communicate with kids

  • Organizational effectiveness (i.e. setting up systems for post-session materials to be mailed & volunteers consistently filling spots, etc.) 

  • Customer service (i.e. quick & effective responses to parents, university volunteers)

  • Asking for what is needed (i.e. contacting potential organizational partners (libraries, organizations) & donors (company, individual) and asking them to support session development  

  • Self-starter (i.e. determined to identify & fill gaps yourself and with your team)
