Learning Outcome: Participants
will be able to apply current standards of care in Pediatric Emergency Nursing to selected situations, in
accordance with the PCEN standards of care for emergency nursing.
Objectives:
- Discuss child abuse and implications in the emergency room.
- Identify emergent neonatal conditions and management in the emergency room.
- Identify potential environmental hazards and treatment for pediatric patients.
- Discuss the pathophysiology, signs, symptoms and treatment of pediatric electrolyte and fluid imbalances.
- Recognize physical/developmental abnormalities and family/cultural differences to incorporate in care.
- Identify pediatric behavioral emergencies, psychiatric emergencies and substance abuse emergencies.
- Discuss pediatric cardiac abnormalities and rationale for emergency treatment.
- Discuss pediatric gastrointestinal disorders that may be seen in the pediatric emergency department.
- Discuss the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms of pediatric genitourinary problems commonly seen in the ED.
- Identify symptoms and nursing management of selected pediatric upper respiratory conditions.
- Identify symptoms and nursing management of selected pediatric lower respiratory conditions.
- Discuss common medical and surgical conditions frequently seen by the pediatric emergency care setting.
- Discuss recognition and management of neurologic abnormalities in the pediatric patient as seen in the emergency department.
- Discuss the utilization of triage in the emergency room.
- Discuss the key concepts related to effectively caring for the pediatric trauma patient.
- Identify selected technical skills that the pediatric nurse in the ED should have.
- Discuss the legal aspects of pediatric nursing care and implications for patients and emergency room staff.
