Instructions and Guidelines

We're excited that you've decided to apply for admission to the Washington Program at the Institute for Responsible Citizenship.

The online application for admission is broken down into several small pages. Please complete the information on each page, review your information at the end, then submit your application. 

Keep in mind that:
  • All fields marked with an asterisk (*) on the application are required.
  • You must click the 'Submit' button at the end to send your application to us. 
  • Review your application at the end before you submit it.
Interested candidates must meet the following guidelines:

African American Male College Sophomores
Applicants must have sophomore standing at an accredited college or university and have completed at least one academic year on a college campus. First-year students with sophomore status are not eligible to apply. Second year community college students are welcome to apply, but must show proof of acceptance to a four-year institution before beginning their first summer in the Institute.

Strong Academic Performance
Although the Institute does not have a GPA requirement, transcripts are carefully reviewed. Applicants’ transcripts should reflect a rigorous and challenging courseload. All majors are welcome.

Campus Involvement
Applicants should be active members of their campus communities, including student organizations, arts or athletic programs, and community service activities.

Two-Summer Commitment
Applicants must be willing commit to two consecutive summers in the Institute.

Resume
Detail the extent of your campus involvement, volunteerism, and work experience. This allows us to better assess your leadership abilities.

Institute Essay
Your essay should discuss America's greatest accomplishment and greatest failure since its founding. It should be no more than three pages, double-spaced. We do not expect these essays to be research papers - only expressions of your opinions.

Writing Samples
Please submit two papers you have written in college-level courses. Your writing samples should demonstrate your ability to think critically. If possible, please submit papers that bear a professor's grade and remarks, but this is not a requirement.

Official Transcript
The official transcript must carry the Registrar's seal or signature. It can be mailed or emailed directly from the Registrar to the Institute at amulinge@theinstitute.net or included in the applicant's package.

Two Letters of Recommendation
Your recommenders may provide their letters to you in a sealed envelope or email them in PDF form directly to amulinge@theinstitute.net.

Your application will not be reviewed until we have received all components including your official transcript and two letters of recommendation. These materials can be sent either electronically to amulinge@theinstitute.net or physically to:
