Musical Mentors Online - Student Application

Welcome to Musical Mentors Online (MMO)! MMO offers one-on-one music instruction and mentorship to at-risk youth grades 3-12 at no cost. The program runs during the school year (September through May). We partner with CASA organizations, homeless shelters, Title 1 schools, and other youth-serving social service organizations to reach students most in need of musical mentorship.

By participating in the program, students receive:

  • 18 private lessons with MMC Teaching Artists

  • Free instrument should they need one

  • Monthly workshops, and studio classes

  • Community Gatherings, which bring students together for games, icebreakers, and more

  • Recital opportunities

  • Free/discounted tickets for live concerts and behind-the-scenes looks at venues in their communities

MMC prioritizes students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to take private lessons or engage in music enrichment opportunities. We typically start accepting applications in August and announce decisions late September. Priority goes to returning students and our partner organizations with limited spots for new students.

*Please note that we currently have limited space in our program but are working hard to raise additional funds and hire more teaching artists to better serve you and your community.

Please help us better understand the families we serve. The below questions help us offer programming that meets the needs of our students and communities.

The following questions help us prioritize applicant needs and best match your student with a Musical Mentor. Please email matt@musical-mentors.org if you have any questions.

e.g. school band, school music classes, group music class after-school, one-on-one instruction, family member teaching. "None" is a perfectly OK answer too (that's what we're here for!).

e.g., digital keyboard, upright piano, drum set, flute
We can help provide instruments to students who need them. However, we encourage parents/guardians/organizations to provide an instrument if they are able to do so. The vast majority of beginner instruments, including electronic keyboards and violins, are under $199.

We will get this process moving as soon as the student has been matched with a Musical Mentor.

If your student were to be accepted to MMO, what days and times would generally work best for lessons? Please specify your time zone.

i.e. My student thinks that guitar is cool and he wants to play like Ed Sheeran. I am really excited for my student to have another adult who serves as a good role model
